mormont
Regardless of whose fault this particular incident actually is: I do recall back in 2016 pointing out that Brexit would in fact increase, not decrease, the tendency on the right to blame the EU for everything. If you didn't get that then, and don't understand now why saying things like 'but we took back control, right?' is absolutely water off a duck's back for these people, you don't really get what Brexit was about. It was about psychology, not economics or borders or anything else. It was about leaning in to the existing tendency to claim superiority over the feckless and wicked Europeans as a political tool to serve vested interests. All the current Cabinet see when they look at these queues is a political opportunity.

john
Quote Often we don’t know who they are, where they’re from and why they are here. Correcting those gaps in knowledge could be a good starting point when drafting policy perhaps … no?

Don't be silly. Next you'll be talking about treating THEM as humans, with human rights, and things - and then where would we be? Admitting that they have the right to be here, to apply for asylum here, and mostly, to stay here - which would be self-evidently terrible, they're a THEM after all! The Anti-Targ
The answer to thousands of people entering Britain in boats run by people smugglers is to make the countries they come from better places to live. Oppression and exploitation in those countries isn't a them problem, it's an us problem.

Why don't we just make every country on the planet a lovely place to live?! Get George Bush Jr and Tony Blair on the line!

While Liz Truss is no Rishi Sunak, her net worth is well over £8m and she has a six figure salary plus expenses as a cabinet minister. Trying to paint her as a woman of the people because she shops at Claire's is not going to work.

If you're mentioning the cost of Liz's earrings, then you should compare to the cost of Rishi's earrings. If you're mentioning the cost of Rishi's shoes, then you should compare to the cost of Liz's shoes. Not that either is remotely a person of the people, doing most of their clothes shopping in M&S or Peacocks - but then, I don't expect a multi-millionaire to do so.
