Eyes Without A Face. Arya Stark and the Faceless Men.

Recommended Posts

The Faceless Men collect the dead and use their bodies as props and disguises to carry out their murders and assassinations.  The immorality of this practice is almost on par with what the Skinchangers and the Others are doing on the other side of the world.  They take control of the helpless and use their bodies to carry out murders.

The corpse masks used by the Faceless Men to hide their real faces do not hide the eyes.  Arya's eyes always remain the same even when she is using or misusing the face skins of the dead.  The emotional bond between the Starks and the direwolves make both creatures more violent.  Arya's is an even more chaotic because the personalities of the dead person whose face she wears seep into her own.  The Tully predisposition to insanity, the direwolf connection, and the personalities leaking from the skinmasks are creating havoc in Arya's mind.

There are already two (hate) threads made about Arya, 'Arya, the Darkheart' and 'Silent Arya'.

What one? The non-existent one made up in the other (hate) thread 'Tully Madness', which surprise surprise has zero textual backing?

This is not a valid comparison.  The Others and their minions kill living people in order to take over their bodies. Skinchangers take over the bodies of creatures (people, in some cases) while they are still alive. The Faceless Men don't take a face until after the person is dead.

Where is the textual evidence for that?

The faceless men and the white walkers violate the dead.  Skin-changers violate the living and enslave them to their will.  All three are acts of evil.

Dead people don't know or care what happens to their bodies after they die. Tampering with the body might violate your religion, laws, or customs, but it's not in the same category as killing a living person.

The Others and their wights do kill living people, which is evil. But if they sometimes reanimate people who had already died, that would not be evil.

The Faceless Men do sometimes kill living people. But we know that they have serious discussions about it beforehand. And we know that, when they do assassinate someone, they try to avoid collateral damage:

Quote

“The guards go with him even when he slips out to make water,” she [Arya] said, “but he doesn’t go when they do. The tall one is the quicker. I’ll wait till he is making water, walk into the soup shop, and stab the old man through the eye.”

“And the other guard?”

“He’s slow and stupid. I can kill him too.”

“Are you some butcher of the battlefield, hacking down every man who stands in your way?” (Dance 64)

So perhaps they are not evil, or at least not always. Most of their collection of faces comes from people who chose to die at the House of Black and White.

The Faceless Men are evil.

Spoiler

Let’s look at the preview of the next book. Arya took the face of poor Mercy, invades the memories of the girl, then uses the face as “prop” to kill. Somebody who might have known Mercy, who doesn’t know she died, would think she did the killing. Arya is guilty. How Arya used Mercy was profane and a sacrilege. I call this another one of Arya’s inexcusable crimes.

Mutilating the dead and using the body parts the way they do is immoral and disgusting.

I bet if Daenerys did it though her 'innovation' would be praised and she would be demonstrating how clever she was and there would be no harm because they were dead anyway and they should be glad to serve the Queen and so on.

Savages. This is nothing new for Arya’s clan. Her family was sacrificing humans to the trees.

Don’t bring up family crimes from the past and be a Targaryen fan. Valyria’s crimes are far worse and numerous

There is no proof the Starks sacrificed people. Bran's vision could be anything. Execution of a criminal and so on. And regardless,  Daenerys' family was sacrificing an exponentially greater number of slaves, experimenting on slaves, torturing them, forcing them to mate with animals etc.

Are the eyes unchanged?

"I do. My time is done." Jaqen passed a hand down his face from forehead to chin, and where it went he changed. His cheeks grew fuller, his eyes closer; his nose hooked, a scar appeared on his right cheek where no scar had been before. And when he shook his head, his long straight hair, half red and half white, dissolved away to reveal a cap of tight black curls.

Personally, I think it might be the voice that's the giveaway.

The voice was strangely familiar, yet it took Ned Stark a moment to place it. "Varys?" he said groggily when it came. He touched the man's face. "I'm not … not dreaming this. You're here." The eunuch's plump cheeks were covered with a dark stubble of beard. Ned felt the coarse hair with his fingers. Varys had transformed himself into a grizzled turnkey, reeking of sweat and sour wine. "How did you … what sort of magician are you?"

...

Something about the way he talked reminded her of Syrio; it was the same, yet different too.

hmm... Well we haven't seen Arya wearing anyone's face as of yet so no.

The emotional bond between the Starks & direwolves do not make both creatures more violent, so no again.

There is no indication that the person/s whose faces she has yet to even wear seep into her own or that they will, so no a third time.

There is no Tully predisposition to insanity, so no a fourth time.

In short, no.
