What an awesome, beautiful crossover episode (probably helped that I didnt have any expectations going in). I need to rewatch ASAP to see what I missed in the first go.

Regarding the musical, I imagine the explanation is radiation/gas from a nebula/cloud affects the parietal lobes of the crew?

Those Old Scientists 10/10

Spoiler

The beauty of the SNW title sequence means it takes a few seconds before you realise they've animated it in Lower Decks style, and then as soon as you get over how amazingly they've recreated it, NACELLE SQUID!

Not laughed that much at the TV for a long time

The Newsome and Quaid did a very nice job translating their animated characters movements to real life.  The boimler run and scream were fun to see…

I recommend The Ready Room extra for this episode, which is practically a lovefest between Newsome, Quaid, Frakes and Wheaton. I also learned there that Newsome has been hired as a writer for Starfleet Academy, I had no idea that was in her wheelhouse too (it seems like she was offered the job because of her ad-libs in this episode?)

That wasn't just freaking brilliant...it wasn't even a placeholder episode just for fun...it actually developed characters in SNW.

And the title sequence!

And that was just about the best thing I've ever seen in Trek in a long long time.

Gonna go gush some more after watching Ready Room...

Fun episode, for certain. I was particularly pleased with the ending and its Lower Decks-ification of the SNW characters. And they managed to wring some pathos out of it all, by having Chapel learn that her relationship with Spock and her humanizing effect on him is destined to come to an end.

Not just that, but it also continues to expand and give context to the nature of their TOS relationship... just really well done.

I guess I’m in the minority, but I didn’t love this one. But that’s kinda on me, it was as good a crossover between these two shows you could ask for. I just love the competence porn, and I’ve compartmentalised Lower Decks in my head to account for that. I enjoy it but I don’t take it seriously as an actual depiction of Starfleet. So this felt like a clash for me, and basically every scene involved someone being grossly unprofessional when it comes to temporal protocol. Mostly Boimler and Mariner obviously, but none of the crew of the Enterprise helped at all. Pike just gave up trying to manage the situation, Boimler was provoked to tell them more, and Spock outright asked him about his future. It all felt strange when two episodes ago, this exact problem nearly destroyed the Federation.

The rest was quite neat, it was a nice touch to have the Orion pirate thing come full circle. But didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous two.

It was a cute episode and fun. This is always the way I preferred Trek. A dark and serious episode one week, and a light hearted and fun one the next week.

Sure, but as long as the serious episode doesn't kill off a promising/beloved character and then they go into song & dance in the next one.

Has that ever happened before? You had me thinking for a sec, because at this point Trek has been around for decades, with over 1000 episodes.

I don't know if it ever happened in that order, but last season of SNW we got the light-hearted, but emotional episode where the ship got turned into a magical kingdom and M'Benga's daughter joined an entity. Hemmer got to shine in that episode then in the following week we get an Alien-like episode and Hemmer died. Fortunately the season's finale was also suitably serious.
