Football: Let's All Laugh at Chelsea

Recommended Posts

Just seen a clip of Anthony celebrating in the Coventry players faces. Imagine rubbing it in to a championship team who had just taken it to you. What an arsegoblin.

Maguire was all class though.

Looks like 'lets all laugh at united' will continue for a while, apparently Ratcliffe wants Tuchel.

Would Man U fans accept the kind of football that Tuchel teams play?

That's not really the big issue though. United are in the process of putting in a structure above the manager which likely means that the manager is going to be more of a head coach. Tuchel is another Mourinho/Conte type who doesn't play well with others and will pick a fight with a DoF and/or Technical Director at the drop of a hat.

Not sure we can do any better though if Ten Hag is sacked with Liverpool, Bayern and Barca all in the market for managers. There's been reports that Allegri might leave Juve at the end of the season as well. Napoli, Milan and possibly Chelsea could be looking for new managers too.

I actually think United probably will need to stick with Ten Hag for another season. It's a terrible off-season to be looking for a top-line manager with all the other vacancies around, and the DoF structure they're introducing is probably worth a shot with Ten Hag as much as any other manager United is likely to be able to attract. I know Ten Hag's football is absolutely bonkers with zero defensive capability, but you have to think wiser heads will push him in the right direction and expectations are low. Once the structure is in and settled, they can then see what they want to do.

He is tactically astonishingly incompetent. You can't teach that. He must have had a successful template at Ajax, but when he arrived at United and found none of the players suited his system, had no idea how to adapt. Take yesterday specifically, when Coventry pulled one back, any sensible manager would have instructed his players to pass the ball around and take the heat out of the opposition. Instead, he got them to keep counter-attacking which resulted in losing transitions and with their joke of a defence, they let in two more goals.

His usual tactic is to get his forwards to press high and have his defence sit low, leaving a farcical huge hole in the middle, which every Premier League manager exploits.

While that's absolutely true, what went wrong at Chelsea is he was forced to take sole responsibility for buying in players, which he didn't feel qualified to do. He might actually do well with a competent full backroom in place. 'Might' doing a lot of heavy lifting, to be sure.

Tuchel has had falling outs with the higher ups in every job he's been in. He's just someone who starts throwing his toys and picking fights with everyone when he doesn't get his way.

Tactically, it's pretty unlikely that he'd do a worse job than the turdfest Ten Hag has served up this season though. Even Newport County (a side sitting in midtable in the 4th division) were just waltzing through our midfield with ease. This issue was apparent even during preseason and Ten Hag has done nothing to mitigate it.

I”ll give Liverpool credit that they secured the DoF and his infrastructure before picking the new manager or deciding on players.  But it does seem like they’ve moved slowly on all of this if Klopp shared his decision back in the autumn.  Perhaps they assumed Alonso would come and they didn’t expect to have a wider search that’s competing with Barca and Bayern among others.

Bayern are narrowing down their list of candidates for the headcoach position.

Frontrunners for a permanent appointment: Rangnick and Emery (no longer on the list: Zidane, and de Zerbi). They met with both and had first probatory talks with them

Frontrunners for an interim appointment (1 season + option if things work out): Flick and Favre. Tuchel apparently really not willing to prolong his stint. He wants to salvage as much from the season (plain speak CL) as he can and then just move on.

Bit surprised that Favre is apparently a candidate, but then again him and Eberl know each other from their Gladbach days with quite a bit of mutual respect.

The arguments in favour of the temporary solution. They could give their preferred solutions a new go. Alonso (obviously) and Hoeneß (yes, Uli Hoeneß's nephew, right now in charge at Stuttgart). Maybe even Klopp after his sabbatical.
