(Tasteless) Fighting words: American chocolate

Just as microbreweries and specialty coffee bean shops have grown youll likely see boutique chocolatiers grow in the future.

Its not hard to exceed the quality of mass producers whether it be beer, coffee or chocolate.

When i lived out west i lived within walking distance to the Ethel M's chocalate factory. The M in Ethel M's is from the Mars family. I guess she was a sister or aunt or something in the familyy and wanted to branch out on her own to do a specialty line. Its product is in every casino and regionally craved.

Personally i didnt sample much of it. The coolest part of the neighborhood chocolate factory for me was the incredible public cactus garden/park that adjoined the facility.

Botanical Cactus Garden - Ethel M Chocolates https://www.ethelm.com/pages/botanical-cactus-garden

Anyway yeah screw any of the mass produced, over processed factory gruel the big grocers push at us. The smaller operations always seem to be better whether its cheese, beans, beer, chocolate or wines.

In Croatia I got to know an Israeli couple who had interesting professions. She worked for Israeli intelligence. He was…A CHOCOLATE ENGINEER!!!!

He had very strong opinions on American chocolate, not in a good way, and he was a freaking chocolate engineer, so…

Hershey's does quite deliberately make their milk chocolate with a sour or tangy taste, which many people do not like. I don't dislike it, though I often prefer other brands of milk chocolate.

Most of the criticisms of American chocolate seem to focus on our sour milk chocolate. Do people think there is really a big difference between American and European dark chocolate? I usually prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate no matter what brand it is or country it's from. And as I understand it, dark chocolate is actually somewhat better (or less bad) in nutritional terms than milk chocolate.

The US -- and certainly where we live, and most particularly our walking around neighborhoods, are packed with very high end, extremely good chocolatiers.  They are all packed.  One can get everything from hot chocolate to chocolate torte to chocolate truffles, to you name it that's chocolate they've got it.  The restaurants also have excellent menus pf excellent chocolate desserts.

Anyone who thinks the US doesn't have great chocolate hasn't tried.  Do. Not. Think. M&Ms or even Hershey.  That stuff is just generic 'candy' of some sort or other.

I used to love Hershey bars, but after moving to Sweden and having European chocolates... well, it's a taste I can't really go back to. OTOH, Snickers are still the best mass market candy bar, IMO, and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are very rare out here and quite expensive as they are imported, but are (nearly) the only way to get a chocolate+peanut butter fix (Sweden is staaaarting to wise up to it, with Marabou producing a big chocolate bar that includes peantus and peanut butter).

My favorite chocolate pralines out here are probably the Belgian brand, Guylian, which makes various oceanic pralines (seashells, seahorses, starfish...) To die for. Lindt's pretty good too.

My favorite American brand of gourmet chocolate ... well, the last that I can remember was Ghiradelli, those were awesome but I haven't had a bar of those since the 90s so don't know if they hold up.

Ormand, the only time I like dark chocolate is if it is with mint. Otherwise it just reminds me of stealing a block of bakers chocolate when I was a kid. *shudders*

We do have a Syrian refugee family that are choclatiers a few hours away. They were one of the sponsored families, and set up a business in a small town. Just heard they are opening up shops in more provinces. Their chocolate is amaaazing.

eta: I used to love Reeses peanut butter cups. Now, one bite, and they are so sweet it hurts my face. Still take that one bit tho...

Peace by Chocolate? Yeah, good stuff all around too.

I remember a smallish dessert chain with a space in Vancouver called Death by Chocolate. Definitely a response to that lol

That only means you haven't had good cake. There's nothing basic about Sachertorte or Tiramisu.

Tiramisu isn't cake!!! And Sachertorte is overrated IMO.

But between mud-cake, fruit cake, sponges, buttercake, chocolate cake, Sachertorte, continental cake, etc. the idea that for everyone there isn't at least one cake that suits is a little absurd.

Snickers is what I imagine diabetes tastes like. It's pleasant enough for a bite, but its hard to even finish a mini sized bar.

I'm not familiar enough with chocolates to know/care where they are from*, but judging from this thread, the main complain is against Hershey? Are there other brands to blacklist? For reference, I find Whittaker quite decent. Seems that they are from New Zealand though. Not sure if they are exported to the US/EU.

*I do blacklist chips/crisps manufactured in the US. Maybe the plain/salted flavours are fine, but everything else from sour to spicy just tastes sweet.

Ghiradelli

Founded 160 years ago in SF by an Italian, obvs.  It's never been at the top of the line in the 50 years around here, though never in the category of Hersheys, etc. It used to be rated like Cadbury's, when Cadbury's was any good.

Around here it's artisanal all the way.   And there's SO MUCH OF IT!!!!!!!  I'm so glad I don't care for chocolate myself because, lordessa, the amount one would have to eat to choose the best, yanno?  Like the quest for the greatest artisanal IPA -- which IPA I can't stand -- all that overhopped hype -- why8ich, by the way, has been declared officially OVER by the Influencers.

I'm  good, whatever.

Nope that's a Mars bar (apparently called Milky Way in the US, not to be cofunsed with what they Sell as Milky Way in outside the US, it's all a bit confusing). Anyway, that's the taste of diabetes. Snicker's is less overkill compared to that.

Saying there’s a difference between Snickers and Mars bars is just nuts.

The only one of those bars that's edible is Bounty. Fight me.

And maybe the one with rum taste, forgot the name.

Right, the peanuts are basically the only difference, but it makes a big difference!

Just when I thought ty was the biggest monstter in this thread...

Bounty are straight out disgusting with that fake coconut flavour filling. And the texture of it, don't get me started. Botton line, sir. I am afraid there's something seriously wrong with you, and your taste buds.
