  2. I was definitely being snarky, but I think they're 4 and 0 since he started playing. They sure are scoring more than when Cam was in there. Haven't seen enough to know how good Allen actually looks.

    Queries about dragons

Or wild animals, Dragons may well have evolved before Man arose. A previous message said that dragons are "unnatural constructs". They would indeed be that, if someone misdirected evolution to make a reptile to develop the form of a dragon, unable here on Earth with no magic around to bypass the laws of physics that stop it from flying. But on Planetos, there is magic, which (like the Force in the Star Wars scenario) would have to be factored into any scientific treatment of natural forces.
  9. By making Tyrion a straight-up good guy they essentially changed the entire nature of his relationship with Shae. He's no longer the chronically insecure person who is falling too deep into his 'girlfriend experience' fantasy with his hired prostitute, despite continually trying to remind himself that Shae doesn't really mean the things she says, and instead he becomes truly in-love with this woman (and her to him). I feel like they also tried to step around the notion that while Shae is in danger, it's primarily because of the situation Tyrion has put her in. Show Shae rejects a bag of gold and promise of a house in Pentos from Varys to be with her lover. I remember finding it all very gag-worthy, to be honest.

We don't have a good description - the most information we have is that they were "belching death" from the walls of Kings Landing during Stannis' attack. From that and the name I'd guess they are primitive flamethrowers. Something like this.
  11. Most Americans are also not encouraged to think of themselves as very rich or as very poor, so often "middle class" is more of a catch-all for people living or attempting to live a certain lifestyle than it really does one's economic standing.
  12. He's hardly played one. He started one game last year when the Saints had benched, well, everyone. I'm underwhelmed by the Cardinals victory (though concede he played well). But the other two wins were CmC one man show in one case and a defensive win in the other. I think you are nuts if you think he will be starting games next year, let alone after that.

NFL 2019: After A Quarter, Are They Who We Thought They Were?

They get him through tonight and he has ten days to let the Dr. Feelgood drugs take care of the swelling. If they'd won the last two games and he was still gimping around I would be more in line with what you're suggesting. But 4-3 is not ideal.
  14. But the trilogy doesn't have to end there, only that the owl eats the lamb. Perhaps his plans don''t entirely come to fruition this time as he's thwarted. Maybe by Glokta or another magi. Would be nice to see more of Shenkt in that regard.

What shouldn't be done...about climate change

I have heaps of empathy and understanding of the situation - just a total lack of sympathy for my own species as a whole, which has began to devolve rapidly in the last 20 years. - NB this does not mean I can't like and form bonds with individual humans that effect me in the real world. I am neither American or European. If our existence is the cause, then surely our depopulation will add to the solution? It's not hard to work out, humans have always been opposed to the natural environment. They are the one animal, among all others on this planet, that shapes its environment rather than exists in it. A greater number of humans is worse for the Earth, whilst a lesser number of humans is better for it. The equation is unbelievably simple. Humanism and environmentalism are not compatible. I just have faith that the worst we can do is bring about our own extinction - our planet and life on it will always survive us. BTW, if you are a young person that thinks climate change is destroying your future, there a lot of other things on the closer horizon to panic over. The global economy is on borrowed time. War between the US and China seems to be becoming inevitable. The Earth itself may be coming to a stage of dangerous axial tilt. Then we have increasing solar activity, an unstable Middle East and automation taking away all of your employment prospects. There is heaps to worry about and protest about, if you feel the need, no need to be a climate fundamentalist.

NFL 2019: After A Quarter, Are They Who We Thought They Were?

I still can't believe Mariota has become this, especially considering his career got off to a good start. I would have absolutely picked him over WInston when they got drafted. Oh well, he'll be a backup if nothing else for the next decade if he wants to it. On tonight's game, why aren't more people saying they need to sit Mahomes? I'd absolutely rest him.

US politics - When the Barr's so low.

I would bet that the definition of "middle class" in New Zealand is more like that in Australia than in the USA. In American culture, anyone who is neither on welfare or a multi-millionaire defines themselves as being "middle class." The USA is one of the few places in the world where most people who have assembly line jobs in factories think they are middle class, and when the American media talks about the "struggling middle class" they are usually referring to people without a college education who hold blue collar jobs. I have been told by Australian acquaintances that in Australia it's considered "putting on airs" to call yourself "middle class" and that people who are owners of small businesses in Australia usually will call themselves "working class" and do not want to identify with the "middle class" label. That's the opposite of the American attitude.
  18. Yeah obviously there's a broader fantasy tradition/cliche irreverence thing going on but a lot of the first trilogy seemed to be a direct response to Eddings in particular.

I’ve been feeling a real desire to re-read Harry Potter lately. From memory HBP was my least favourite. Re: the Night Circus, calling @Darth Richard II

What are things you do for self-care?

Lovely topic. I recently wrote a piece for our staff newsletter (following world mental health day) discussing the importance of looking after your mental wellbeing and what you can do for that. Led to some self reflection on what i do. The biggest thing for me is carving out at least 30 minutes from every day where i do something i enjoy, or im interested in in. 30 minutes of selfishness if you will. That might be anything - reading a book, watching tv, having a soothing soak in the tub, going for a walk, etc. Making sure i set aside at least that half hour slot every day has been really helpful for me

How serious is the court action re the Irish sea border being illegal (because of a law JRM put in place to prevent it from happening under May's watch)? If it's illegal to vote for a deal containing such a border without amending the relevant bit of legislation then not only is there a chance of a deal not getting enough votes, but it could be there can't even be a vote on the deal before 19 Oct.

What exactly is the point of Quentyn?

One reason why Frog's chapters are not called simply "Quentyn", is perhaps because Frog's real name is not Quentyn, but rather Aegon. He's the frog that became a PTWP. Possibly, the reason his last chapter is called "The Dragontamer" is because that is the chapter in which he tames a dragon. Viserion actually seemed cowed by his whip. And as for his demise, I don't think that occurred.

    Gender relations in Westeros

That is the Andal culture. Valyrian culture is a lot different. Targaryen women are warriors. A Valyrian woman who can ride a dragon is higher up their rankings than a male who cannot.

Unclear. The coalition gutted a lot of worker protections in 2012, but as far as I can tell a lot of people completely failed to notice this, so it depends on how visible the loss will be.
