Game of Thrones Five Years Later
The hairy bear replied to The Bard of Banefort's topic in General (GoT)
The finale from the Sopranos and Seinfield were controversial, but they also had some fans, and at least, they stayed true to the characters. They may not be the ending one had hoped for, or they may have missed the tone, and surely they were not amongst the best episodes of those shows. But they didn't harm the integrity of the story, making the rewatching of earlier episodes a painful endeavour. Meanwhile it seems that, if anything, time has consolidated the idea that the ending of GoT was truly awful. It is the first that comes to anyone's mind when asked to give an example of a bad finale. In a way, I'm glad that they botched it so much. A midly-competent mediocre finale would have divided the fanbase, and would have disguised the bad writing from the last seasons. Now, we have a textbook example of the worse traps one should avoid in a finale: unearned plot twists to give huge surprises just for the sake of it, sudden reversals of character developlments, too much obsession in subverting expectations, forgeting who are your central characters... Given the (absolutely deserved) fan backleash, it serves as a cautionary tale for future writers. -
Exactly. Which is why I resist the idea that the prologue is about the BwB. As I said above, the BwB action is main book action (involving Riverrun and the Freys, not Jeyne), told from these two points of view. The prologue is something else. Either Nymeria's pack attacks, or Forley Prester's party makes it safely to the Westerlands and the prologue happens there. We're only halfway through 20 Questions, we're on course. That hint has me feeling hot; I've narrowed it down to two options if I'm on the right track. It might be a question of continents. Is it currently in Essos? -

FantasyCreature replied to Lilac & Gooseberries's topic in Forum Games
I'll not count this question, as some kind of compensation... 1. No, it is not animate (anymore). 2. No, it was not human when animate. 3. No, it is not North of the Wall. 4. No, it is not a dead animal. 5. Yes, it was seen on page alive or dead, as opposed to just being mentioned. 6. No, it is not of a botanical nature (tree or plant). 7. No, it is not bone. 8. No, it is not any kind of meat or dish made of meat. 9. No, it is not an egg. 10. No, it is not the Blackwood dead weirwood tree. #. No, it is not something made of animal skin, like leather. :sigh: I should've chosen something simpler, this one blurs so many lines. I'll give a hint. It's not any creature like animal, human, bird, etc, but it's a part of some creature. -

Bloodraven, Bran, and the Old Gods
Club-foot cleft-lips replied to H Wadsworth Longfellow's topic in General (ASoIaF)
I'm leaving the forum after making this one last post for this very reason. Makes me too paranoid. Besides the timing is right. Its always been my intention to post for a while and then stop after reaching a wholly mature and appropriately nice number of comment and topic posts. Well it was fun while it lasted. Peace people VV -

I found that last Bran chapter in ADWD fascinating. I'm looking forward to the chapter in TWOW or ADOS where George writes from the point of view of an eternal tree. -
Football: The ever-reliable Tottenham Hotspur
BigFatCoward replied to polishgenius's topic in Entertainment
The pitch is going to be soaking tonight, its been pissing down all morning in london. A draw sets up the final day perfectly, you have to think City can hump West Ham, whereas Everton's defence is pretty solid so goal difference is not guaranteed to go Arsenal's way. I'd take a draw tomorrow at Man Utd, on the assumption there is no way they don't lose to City in the FA cup so 6th gets a Europa league spot. -

Hey, so long as a part of my post response was helpful. Even if its just the introduction. hehehe. I wonder how his perception of time is like when inside the tree's memories. Makes me think of The Giver. -
The sin of skinchanging
Club-foot cleft-lips replied to James Fenimore Cooper XXII's topic in General (ASoIaF)
You know, if I were a betting man, I'd say that you two were also this same person. Same with @Kierria (who liked the topic post), and maybe even the topic poster @James Fenimore Cooper XXII (if I were to make a guess just based on the language he uses in some of his posts and how all of these people who I suspect are the same like a lot of his posts/ but maybe they just like his posts!) But @Skahaz mo Kandaq shares a birthday with @Moiraine Sedai spaced exactly 30 years apart. @Son of Man a birthday with @Kierria also spaced exactly 30 years apart. Son of man also joined the same year as @Darth Sidious and the others, within 13 days before @Roswell a month before @The Lord of the Crossing who besides fitting the time frame, does seem to display a tendency like posts by all of these people while not following or being followed by any of them. In fact all of these poster seem to like each others comments a lot, But maybe thats just whats to be expected from having similar opinions. But no, I'm just being silly. If one person really did have +8 accounts just to like their own comments, what would be the point? That would just be sad and dishonest. I mean, Just because I can find connections between all of these accounts that might suggest this, doesn't mean they must be the same person. No, I'd hate to accuse anyone falsely. And if just one of the people I accused here was innocent, They might be treated poorly in the forum, which isn't fair. Sure it would mainly be the fault of any person who made so many accounts (if they did), But I wouldn't be blameless. Well, at the end of the day, that's something for the mods to decide, And I accept that. But you all should consider following each other. Five of you joined within the same three months, four of you share birthdays with each other, and two a birth year. Coincidence sure can be a funny thing. And You all have so much in common! And based on your liked comments, you're already each other's biggest fans! -

Are Generative AI (LLM programs) produced illustrations… art?
Ran replied to Ser Scot A Ellison's topic in General Chatter
OpenAI has put out a bunch of short videos about what they're calling GPT-4o, and some of it is extremely impressive. This one in particular has Reddit abuzz: The fact that the AI sounds not a little bit like Scarlett Johnasson is probably not a coincidence -- Sam Altman tweeted just "her" after these started coming out, referring to Spike Jonez's Her (which is a really great film, BTW), seeming to confirm that some of this stuff was inspired by the film. Lots more examples here. -
Population of the Nine Regions of Westeros
Alden Rothack replied to Alden Rothack's topic in General (ASoIaF)
I am aware of both takes, I agree with some parts but not others, the population has to match the descriptions of in the books on its not valid I don't agree that any of them are too high, apart from the Iron islands all of them could go higher the Reach for example is the same size as the Carolingian Empire which may have reached as many as 20 million in the 9th century. -
I'd say the country is royally fucked. Dems suck at messaging and getting people excited. Biden is too old and not charismatic enough to get it going. The country is really filled with some really terrible, selfish, ignorant and dumb people with memory problems if they think Trump is going to do anything good to help them unless they're a white christian male. Biden though has absolutely dropped the ball and his lack of being able to message things, and lack of being out for the public to see is an issue. Aren't Dems doing better aside from Biden though? Like he is THE issue here?

Could Orell's hatred of Jon pass to Bran, through Varamyr?
Sandy Clegg replied to Sandy Clegg's topic in General (ASoIaF)
What is dead may die, I agree. The ironborn would see things differently, perhaps. These books seem to have a bit of a thing about life after death. Almost like a central theme, you might say? -
What I'm most surprised by from the trailer is the literalness of the Roman references. I'd noticed it in the character names ,but he's really gone all in on it. Bread and circuses, indeed... I feel like there's a decided Atlas Shrugged quality to it as well, from the premise of a visionary architect being denied, but obviously the "Fall of the Roman Empire" decadence seen in Megalopolis has more to do with Randian philosophy than the apparently utopic progressive vision that Driver's character has. So ... a kind of reversal, and thus rebuttal, of it? Apparently Coppola has said in the past that it was an influence, anyways. I am sure it is going to be a grand mess, but some of the images were striking.

In that interview she also mentions Snowdonia as a filming location where herself, Jace, & sister Rhaena are all present. Any ideas what this might be? As straightforward as the Sowing, or something else?

I was completely baffled by what they were trying to achieve with Bran. In the books, I assume that Bran's magical abilities have a material impact in the fight against the Others, and that he does a lot more than just stare into space.

Game of Thrones Five Years Later
StarkTullies replied to The Bard of Banefort's topic in General (GoT)
I hate everything about Season 8, and I hate how Bran became king (but I don't have a problem with that being the book's endgame, if done differently... which it will be). But I think this idiotic reason for the prisoner to be allowed to nominate Bran as king is misunderstood. I think "Bran has the best story" meant that as the "Three-Eyed Raven", Robot Bran was the keeper of everybody's story. Of course the showrunners/Tyrion wildly confused this point by then going on about Bran's individual story (if I remember correctly: I only saw the finale episode once and don't plan to see it again). -

@Protagoras @Castellan don't get me wrong: I agree the BwB are planning something. But I lean towards them attacking the Freys, with Brienne and/or Jamie as our POV. Probably both. The BwB are VERY focused on the Freys and there are not many of those with Prester's column. So I think they will infiltrate Riverrun and sabotage from within there. The extra Lannister soldiers sent with Prester serve to weaken Riverrun's defenses, and the various siege forces from Brackens, Vances etc. are all going home, so are not sticking around to help Freys. This is why the bit about Genna matters. As for Brynden, I think there is good reason we first met him in the Vale. His future is there. He spent more than a decade there and has many many friends. A tourney has been called, and since a large number of Riverlands families have kin in the Vale, Brynden will disguise himself as a hedge knight or knight in service and accompany one of these large groups headed to the Vale. He may die there, or he may win a position as a winged knight defending his nephew, which puts him in place to advise and help Sansa free herself from LF's clutches.

This is extremely concerning and outright disappointing. Trump does absolutely nothing to solve any of the issues people have with Biden, which are rather mild to begin with IMO.
