  1. Past hour
  2. Does “out” mean “out of a window?”
  3. PSG choking stat - they have played in 3 2 legged CL semi finals, and lost all 6 legs.
  4. That's hilarious! Although I still believe it's a coincidence. After all, those names are not such strange names in Austria. And George already confirmed that an even more striking coincidence (the teenage marriage between Joffrey Borgia and Sancia/Sança of Aragon) had been unintended.
  5. Sure! I'll get a pencil, lick the end (professionally) and draw some blanks. I wanted to come back to something you touched on in an earlier post about Mirri Maaz Durr. Mountains blowing in the wind like leaves.... - the sun rising in the west and setting in the east: the blood moon eclipse that Tyrion describes as the sunrise - an ominous portent if I ever saw one - the seas drying up and turning red: the Dothraki sea in the fall - mountains blowing in the wind like leaves: not actual mountains but the khals themselves are the mountains - sons of the Mother of Mountains in Vaes Dothrak, metaphorically speaking. I think we've seen the first two, but have yet to see what blowing in the wind means.
  6. it wasn't a criticism of Dallas, more a compliment to how OKC have built such a solid roster, with one obvious superstar (who is definitely more quiet and less showy than most, which probably greatly helps with team chemistry). If the conference finals is OKC v the timberwolves it will be interesting to see the contrast between the 2 young superstar guards, very much a ying and yang type deal with personalities. i suppose you judge Dallas post trade on their record since then, which was pretty impressive.
  7. First, you have to consider what their team was before. All guards and forwards, zero wings and centers. Lots of dead weight. Next, the whole point of having Luka, is that you let him elevate your role players. Yeah, they aren't fantastic, sure, but all they need to do is provide enough defense and be lob threats or shoot open threes. Which again, wasn't available at the end of last season. Last, teams should not need to be GSW + KD to be considered good. Everyone is trying and there's only one winner.
  8. Today
  9. He still values loyalty over competence. But he also tries to prevent any single member/faction in his regime from becoming powerful enough to be a threat to himself. So it will be interesting who will be rewarded and whose influence will be reduced. Prigozhins fall last year increased the power of the military, while the recent terror attack decreased the power of the FSB, otoh the guys who ran the re-election have to be rewarded somehow…
  10. All right, going to backup mw_page and try and change its collation to see if we can fix that. ETA: Not as easy as I hoped, running into a duplicate that I can't track down. Once I can do that, hopefully it'll be the only example and we can move on.
  11. There’s also the possibility of reform of the UN. Not super likely at the moment but definitely on the table.
  12. I completely disagree that GRRM is entirely predictable. He does set things up so they feel earned, yes. But he also drops red herrings everywhere, and creates a sense of spatial disconnection that makes his clues difficult to interpret, much like prophesy. I can indeed construct a number of lineage-based predictions but as I said in response to @Sandy Clegg above, he is only deciding which seeds he is going to bring to flower AS HE GOES. So a great number of the lineage hints he has dropped are in fact likely to lead to not much. In the meantime, I really don't see the point in arguing endlessly about a specific prediction of mine when I myself know that it is only one of several possibilities which have text basis. Yes, which is exactly what lineage hints are: things that people don't really notice, because they are trapped in patriarchal thinking, and so don't retain. Yet they are there for us to interpret. That is all I am asking people to do. No, I am well aware of that, so not "learning" it here. And I have never once said that everyone in the 7 kingdoms admired Daeron I. You misunderstood. But that is what BENJEN thought of Daeron I. It says nothing at all of what Aegon IV thought of Daeron I and Aegon IV is the only one who matters when it comes to the name he chose for his son. All the evidence says that Aegon IV admired and wanted to emulate Daeron I by invading Dorne again. You can not take what a single character thinks of another and apply it to every other character as if they all think the same way. GRRM is VERY aware that different character feel differently about other people, past and present and his stories are character driven, not meta-reference driven. Mostly you are just sticking to your own bias, here. Seriously, GRRM writes by thinking of what his characters are thinking, and symbolism is not his driving principle. Not to say he is against using it, where it fits. Yes, and all I am asking from you is some self-awareness and acceptance of the evidence that there is. Your bias is so strongly in favour of the names being entirely symbolic that you refuse to see the clues he has dropped. But there is EVIDENCE of characters being named after other ones, including other characters from the mother's family. There is evidence of naming patterns within families. There is evidence that certain families are more linked by marriage than others. And there is evidence that GRRM considers women characters just as important as male ones even though they cannot pass on their family name. So assuming female characters have no influence on naming patterns is really just a bias. GRRM is a voracious reader of history. He is creating an epic that has the feel of how real history works. And in real European history, it is impossible to understate the importance of lineage.

  14. It isn’t really meant to be able to directly solve problems. It’s a public forum to discuss global issues and avoid another calamity like WW2. I don’t think there’s a way to truly avoid inequality, as there are huge disparities in the world, be that in terms of wealth or population. If each country were truly given an equal opportunity, then you would have a situation where a nation of 100 million people, has the same amount of influence as one with just 10.
  15. yeah, having the best and 3rd best player on court doesn't help if you also have the 8th, 9th and 10th best. Luka is going to have to be nearly perfect to keep it competitive, not put up 19/9/6 in 41 min, and shoot 12.5% from 3. Gobert should enjoy his DPOY, I don't think he's winning another one.
  16. Well, I think Jaqen deliberately got himself imprisoned. He had a plan of some sort, likely recruiting Arya for the FM. But the fire was something he hadn´t foreseen, so... yeah he probably would have died if Arya hadn´t intervened.
  17. The big question with Putin's reshuffle is the extent that this will impact the Russian war effort in Ukraine. In many ways, Ukraine has benefited from Putin valuing loyalty over effectiveness.
  18. What? All those guys sans Luka and Kyrie are bench players on a good team. Mavs will be lucky to win a game this series. Their team stinks.
  19. This is exactly why I know nothing about anything. It would be a good reason for Lyanna to run in the first place and it could explain Brandon's reaction the Rhaegar crowning Lyanna QoLaB. It's a very jealous reaction. Again, I can't dismiss Wolfmaid's contention that Robert is Jon's father. Although GRRM has gone to some length to have him dismissed. I can't believe that Robert only produced children with black hair and blue eyes. Out of 16 bastards, at least one of them would be against type. This would also be a good reason to hide Jon from Robert. Ned's thoughts at Robert's deathbed have the feel of a confessional. "I lied to you, I hid the truth from you, I let them kill you." That has a lot of buried anger attached to it. Also "yes, I will take care of all your bastards." If Rhaegar knew something about the song of ice and fire and that involved a pact between Aegon I and the Starks; he may have had a reason to make sure that Lyanna did not fall into Aerys' hands. If he did have her at the tower of joy, I doubt he could have stopped Aerys from taking her. I prefer to think Rhaegar would have done the right thing.
  20. I always thought it was boujie, but looking it up apparently both are acceptable.
  21. I won't go so far as to say anymore, but my desire for steak and ribs has fallen off a cliff and I have no explanation for it. Also, as someone who has historically been an apple a day guy, I really don't crave them anymore. Go figure.
  22. Speaking of building rosters, the Dallas remake is impressive. Regardless of how their season ends, I think its already a huge success considering how disastrous their roster was after the Irving trade. Their new additions are all fairly young as well. Minutes played against Clippers. Doncic (255 mins) Irving (240 mins) Washington (212 mins) Joined midseason Jones Jr (176 mins) Joined last offseason Lively (122 mins) Drafted last offseason Kleber (116 mins) Gafford (109 mins) Joined midseason Green (101 mins) Exum (53 mins) Joined last offseason Hardaway (22 mins)
  23. The saddest thing about my nana getting too old is that she can no longer make rice pudding. Carnation milk was weird, it literally served no others purpose than to make rice pudding in my world.
  24. Yea he thinks trespassing is violence which is a crock of shit quite frankly. He can try to dictate the rules all he wants, he is absolutely in the wrong here on all accounts. This is why I call bullshit on his "right to protest" comment. He has been intentionally demonizing the protests and claiming non violent actions are violent to de-legitimatize the protests.
  25. How's he spot on when he is downplaying the horrors that Israel has unleashed on millions of Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank? He's been super quiet about the Pro Israel side committing the actual violence on campuses (along with the cops). He is also blindly screaming anti semitism at the protests and demonizing the students involved in these protests that are being brutalized by the police.
  26. Interestingly my HS team tried this for a drive. I at somewhere between 5'7 and 5'8, lined up with four of the other best shorter athletes who were also really strong to play O-Line for a series. We fucking mauled them. There weren't any massive holes for a homerun TD, but we took out their D-Line with ease and the RBs could get 5-7 yards almost every play. On the draft, since I left before it started, I like the Vikes picking JJ. He should be ready coming in, fixes so many of their cap issues and let's be honest, he doesn't need to be great out the gate. I doubt he'll ever be more than a guy that makes a few random Pro Bowls, but that's okay. He just needs to be a top half of the league QB on a rookie deal and this team can make some waves.
  27. It would be just as easy to return to Lannisport by ship; staying briefly to tell Robert that Lyanna was dead and return to the Quiet Isle, collect Lyanna's bones and continue down the Kings Road. Quiet Isle has a tragic Bael the Bard-ish twist as well. The flower of Winterfell is stolen and hidden in a cave, where she gives birth and is later returned to her family. Elder Brother's room is a cave with a door. If that counts for anything.
