Laws That Keep Me From Drinking

I'll concede some of the laws that keep me from drinking are in the public's best interest. Like laws that prevent the sale of alcohol after a certain time to keep drunks off the road.

But the Sunday thing? It's not like the store is closed. It's open selling other stuff and the booze is right there. But I can't buy it because why? What's so special about Sunday that liquor shouldn't be sold?

I'm glad you agree with me Scott.

The spoiler was my initial reply.

Yeah, let's just get it over with and convert the churches into casinos. And once automated cars kick in we can be blitzed at all times.

Playing video poker while enjoying a vodka tonic and smoking a cigarette on a Sunday morning is a religious experience.  Or so I've been told. :pimp:

Sunday morning hold the church down at the bar.

Heathens!  I approve, but it’s weird to me, as aside from a couple of years in DC and one in the UK the rest of my life has been spent in regions largely run by Jesus Christ.

Whose first miracle was turning water into wine so the party could go on. Don't blame him.

When I was a teenager, we lived in a semi-rural area. It wasn't that far out, just 9 miles to a Safeway and 7 to a convenience store. There was single business in the area, half tavern and half convenience store. They held church services in the tavern on Sundays. It later burned down though.

We just got rid of those laws in MN last summer.  Used to have to go to WI to get alcohol on Sunday, or buy it off-sale from a bar.  Still don't allow sales after 6pm on Sundays, but it's better than nothing.  Also, all sales have to be at a liquor store, no selling anything but 3.2 beer at grocery or convenience stores.

There is a story or a song or something here.

We did still have some restrictions until a few years back. Stuff like, they used to literally pull a cover over the booze in supermarkets so that you couldn't even look at it before 8am in the mornings on weekdays. Hilarious. I remember once needing to buy a bottle of prosecco or something for the late afternoon in work, but I knew I wouldn't have time to get out at lunch, plus I wanted it chilled ready for the afternoon. I used to start work at 8am so I was on my way in at 7.30am - that's when I needed to buy it (not when I wanted to drink it!). I remember having a massive fit about not being allowed to buy wine before 8 or 9am. Makes no sense to me at all. Pretty sure we got rid of that rule in the meatime.

Pfft? Not being able to drink on a Sunday! Man - you’ve got it easy!!!

Count yourself lucky - there’s whole STONE CIRCLES in my county because people thought they could play games and sports and music on the LORDS DAY OF REST!!!!

Think AGAIN BOZOS

no really tho the amount of Cornish folklore where people get turned into stone on sundays is kind of hilarious, I mean, not for THEM but they’re probably used to it by now. They’re all pretty OLD

That rings a bell now that you mention it.  I've got this image in my brain of being in a grocery store and the whole booze section being closed off.  Like, shielded from sight closed off.  I'm 99% sure that was in Glasgow, but I could be getting my places mixed up because I could see something like that here too.

One thing that I did find a little strange about the UK with regard to drinking culture was how early the pubs close.  I wouldn't mind it now that I'm a bit older because 11 or 12 is pretty much the latest I stay out nowadays except for fairly rare occasions, but having some shit nightclub be your only option for outside-the-house booze after 11 was a bummer at times.  I do get it from the perspective of zoning, though.  Often they're right there in a neighborhood and you don't want a bunch of loud drunks smoking cigs til 2am out in front every night.

I'm a great admirer of British pubs overall though.  There's some element to it that I can't quite put my finger on that American bars never seem able to properly capture, even if that's what they're trying to do.

Wait. These aforementioned Cornish folk. How sure are we they weren't sporting, dancing, gaming, and then getting stoned?

Not actually turning into stone.

I've seen the stones! I've seen the proof!! Lots of witches and fairies and pagan type creatures for some reason punishing humans within a Christian framework which doesn't seem to make much sense but I never much questioned that...

I remember this happening to my father once when I was a kid.

He was buying some beer and it was about 11:50 a.m. on a weekday. He ended up leaving in a rage instead of waiting the 10 minutes for the transaction to be legal. Texas amirite S John?

That's the south of Louisiana dude!

In a strange twist of fate, the further south you get in this state, the less oppressive the religious laws are. (Has to do with New Orleans being a port, bringing in that enlightened shit from up north of the country)

Edit: Ya'll ever see that documentary featuring the Avenger Kevin Bacon? It's like that.

I’ve unfortunatley never been to Louisiana but would love to go to New Orleans, closest I’ve been was Miami, where drinking on sunday wasn’t much of a problem, other than that I have family in California and visit there quite often and have never known it to be an issue there either.

Is the whole no drink on sundays thing quite common in some of the Southern States?, I’ve even heard of things like dry parishes?, excuse my ignorance on this I’m genuinely interested, as,meaning no offence to these States/Parishes, it seems really backwards.

Yeah, very fishy. As seen on True Blood and in games like the World of Darkness series, the Fairies, the witches, and the Christians are all in different factions.

I'm not sure. I know about the Louisiana and Texas laws because I've lived in both of these states for extended periods. I've never bothered to look up the other state's drinking laws. (Except for the Washington Alcohol Tax).
