HBO's "Westworld" [Spoilers!]

True Detective was not the kind of show you could put on tv every year and maintain the same quality. Part of what made Season 1 so good was because Nic took his time to write the whole season, and Cary was the only director of the whole show. That all changed for season 2 when HBO tried to make it a regular/annual thing.

Have you seen this theory that the first season of True Detective was plagiarized from Thomas Ligotti? Who is Thomas Ligotti? Exactly why it probably worked. Either way, the more I read about Pizzalotto, the more I wonder about his talent.

West World looks pretty great, tbh. I always loved the movie growing up. When I was a kid, it was one of those movies that made me feel like shit.

Yeah I heard about it during the course of the first season. Don't care much about it really, not saying it's okay if he really did do it, but it doesn't spoil my appreciation of season 1. What made True Detective so good was not only the story and the writting but also the acting and the directing, which were all inconsistent during season 2.

It feels like it's riffing on AMC/Channel4's "humans" in the way it makes you feel like the robots are possibly the victims. It'll certainly make it more grey when they turn on the humans. Has a great thriller tone throughout the trailer.

I thought something similar, but about it being reminiscent of Blade Runner, particularly the line from the robot about wanting to meet his creator.

The trailer did look very interesting.

All good AI based things to riff off. Hopefully something interesting emerges from it. I can't wait to see the other worlds explored but maybe that'll be a season 2 thing unless the show is keeping the other elements under wraps?

I must admit that I wasn't exactly blown away by this trailer. I'll probably give it a shot though, the cast is great and I'm a sucker for anything with a western element in it :P

I wouldn't even call that a theory anymore. It's basically gospel truth.

I know, I was trying to be polite. The evidence is damning. I'm pretty psyched for Westworld though, I think HBO needs something strong since GOT and True Detective are suffering slow, miserable deaths.

The original Westworld probably doesn't hold up, but:

Spoiler

I'll never forget the sword fight in the original movie as the man slowly realized the Black Knight wasn't going lose. The sense of fear and horror he displayed really upset me.

GoT is suffering a slow, miserable death?

Just came off an award winning season, and just aired the most well received episode to date. Easily the biggest show on tv. True Detective was cancelled because it's second season was so bad. HBO would probably back up dump trucks full of cash to D&D's houses if they could convince them to do more GoT.

Yeah, but it's terrible. It can be successful and dying at the same time (and no matter how successful, it has a time limit, does it not?), but this is not the place for this discussion, my friend.

Well, Vinyl has been cancelled so I'm guessing HBO are hoping that this will be a hit.

And the trailer does look good.

Whoa. I didn't pay any attention to Vinyl but HBO almost never cancels shows after just one season, especially dramas, its too much of an admission of failure. There's basically always at least a second season; the only other one season dramas I can think of are Luck, which had the dead horses issues, and John from Cincinnati, which was terrible.

Have to admit I never got around to Vinyl. The subject matter wasn't that appealing to me and HBO have lost that sheen of "I'll try anything by them".

I'm sure HBO would be more than happy for their shows to suffer "slow miserable deaths" if they got GOT ratings.

I want Westworld to succeed but I'd be sad if HBO saw this as a signalt to only make fantasy and sci-fi shows. Maybe they need to revisit some of the genres they've had success with in the past? I can understand why they keep trying different things but I guess it gets harder to find subject matter that might work.

You could view it as just a way for HBO to subsidize its comedy and miniseries departments, which never get high ratings but are consistently very good to great.

And the other announced drama that is pretty far along in production is David Simon's new project, set in the porn industry in the '70s, which is pretty far removed from sci-fi/fantasy. Not much has been said about it, but it stars James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, so its probably going to be pretty off-beat.

I can think of one reason why a HBO show set in the porn industry might appeal to audiences. The fact it's David Simon means they are almost guaranteed critical acclaim too.

Given HBO is based around subscriptions it would be healthy if they use the GOT shows to pull in the crowds and use some of that money for niche projects. I'm guessing Vinyl had a pretty big budget given the creators involved.
