Watch, Watched, Watching: The Good, Bad and Ugly

Thought about going to see Avengers while I was picking up my herb, glad I didn't 'cause Logan is on.

What a terrific movie. I don't really buy the lackluster villain complaints as particularly significant because although the mirror match isn't particularly novel, it works within the themes of the film and the anti-capitalist sentiments kind of redeem the scientist guys' ambiguity.

And now S.W.A.T. is on? Damn you, television! You know I can't change the channel on Colin Farrell!

What am I supposed to do? Not watch this Cop Porn jackoff with a surprising amount of my favorite actors in it?

I guess you can use SWAT as your warm up and Avengers as the payoff?

Oh, I came by the time Jeremy Renner left the force.

But I've been rewatching LOST at work in between news commercials (I love these smart phones. Why didn't I have one sooner?) and I forgot about the scene on the raft between Michael and Jin that's a shout out to Empire Strikes Back. Really made me smile, and it was timely because I'd just found out we were over drawn on basic saline by almost 17%.

17% can you believe that shit? I swear to fucking god that if these nurses have been sticking people they don't like there's going to be hell to pay.

HBO's Barry is a collossall (sp) and surprising disappointment to me.  Not very interesting and not funny at all, and not even trying to let Bill Hader do anything comedic.

I am glad to see I am not the only one who thinks this. I havent seen tonights episode yet but so far it's just not that interesting to me.

Watched Terminator: Genisys the other night.  I didn't think it was as bad as advertised (and wasn't expecting much), but just about.  Jai Courtney was not good, and it's not like replacing Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese is a tall order, but he still failed miserably.  Emilia Clarke wasn't great either, but I'm sorry, neither is Linda Hamilton.  I actually thought the concept was fine, even interesting if executed properly, but...

Spoiler

...I could not get over wondering the entire movie:  so, when exactly was John Connor born in the timeline?  It explicitly never made sense - Dany and Jai clearly never fucked before they got to 2017.  Thus, logically, John shouldn't exist.  This is a pretty basic thing, and maybe it bugged me too much, but it ruined my suspension of disbelief - which is much of the battle in a time-traveling scifi flick.

Not really sure this should go here but is there anyway to set amazon video so it automatically plays 4k content version of a program rather than HD?  Netflix seems to do this as the default but my amazon doesn't. Amazon does have a 4k tv show section, but not one for movies that i can find.

Also, WTF is HDR, some shows say they are 4k, some HDR (jessica jones for example)?  is it supposed to be better than normal HD?  if so i can't tell the difference in the slightest.

I saw Avengers: Infinity War over the weekend. It was fine I suppose, the ending felt a bit cheap.

Other than that I've been watching The Alienist, I think I'm about halfway through. Again, it's ok. The actual alienist is probably the least interesting character which doesn't help.

Don't know if this is what you're looking for or if it's the same in the UK as it's in the US, but when you play an Amazon video here, there's like a nut icon (as in nuts and bolts) and it allows you to change streaming quality from Good, Better, or Best by increasing or decreasing streaming GB per hour.

I'm a huge fan. Definitely not one for everyone I guess.

I have this option on the Prime app on my phone, each time I click on an episode to DL it asks me what quality level I want. I always go for the middle option as it's just on my phone screen so it doesn't need to be perfect.

Netflix also have the same thing I've discovered. Normally it doesn't matter but for 4k you have to set it for high. Took fucking ages to find it.

Finished Better Call Saul Season 3. It was okay but not as good in humor or drama as the first season. I feel like some of the plotlines are going in circles and there's too much reliance on Breaking Bad's characters and ideas. It needs to create it's own unique identity which is what Season 1 did well. Knowing the fate of some of the characters also diffuses a lot of potential tension. The season finales also lack payoff and leaves something to be desired and Season 3 was no different and possibly the least interesting finale. Hope they can inject some more humor and take the story in a bit of a different direction with Season 4.

Now on to Peaky Blinders. Caught the first 2 episodes of S1 and am enjoying it so far. Reminds me of something that I can't quite put my finger on and I think it's due to it being a period piece. I had to watch the first episode in subtitles to catch all the dialogue. There's something offsetting about the music they use. It feels a little out of place and contemporary given the period setting. Any Brits care to comment if they thought so too?

I actually think the music works really well for all its out of place given the period setting. Something about it just works for me.

Recently I finished up A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2. This was such a great watch, and a brilliant adaptation of the books. Tons of fun. And the young actors who play Klaus and Violet are wonderful.

Next Netflix watch will be 3% Season 2

Week-to-week watching: iZombie, Westworld, The Americans, Legion. Waiting for the Handmaid’s Tale and the Expanse to come to the U.K. :(

Shrek. Because it's on Netflix now. Poor frog and snake.

Edit: Ugh. I'm not seeing Infinity Wars until this Saturday. It's taking every fl oz of my not inconsiderable willpower to stay away from the Avengers spoiler thread.

Hold on, hold on. You can't have just said that. Replacing Michael Biehn, if remakes are evidence of anything, is next to impossible. Supporting Jai Courtney's terrible performance by lowering the quality body of work produced by Biehn is a logical fallacy of a new order.

While at home sick I watched Prisoners. Hmm. Mixed feelings on this. Firstly, it feels a bit overly long. But I did like the ending. There are some good performances and ultimately the themes are thought-provoking. So on balance...it's good but I just wish they'd made it a little shorter - it's nearly two and half hours and it feels it too.
