Maltaran
In another display of Tory pettiness, Sunak cancelled a meeting with the Greek prime minister because Mitsotakis said on the BBC that the Elgin Marbles should be returned.
mormont
I think the real insult is offering the Greek PM a meeting with Oliver Dowden instead. That's surely a serious diplomatic offence.

kissdbyfire
What world-beating climate action looks like. https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/sunak-cameron-king-cop28-private-jets-b2455630.html Rishi Sunak is facing fresh outrage from climate campaigners after it emerged that the prime minister, the King, and foreign secretary David Cameron are taking separate jets to the Cop28 conference in Dubai. Downing Street confirmed all three of the leading British representatives at the crucial summit – aimed at cutting global emissions – will each get their own private plane. I suppose it doesn't matter since it seems oil & gas deals are the actual purpose of this summit. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-67508331

Fragile Bird
Those comments about his beard made me look up Darling. What a good-looking man he was with his beard! Shaving it off made him much more ordinary. It is amazing how people who were left-wing in their youth can migrate so far to the right. And he was just 70, his birthday was this month. eta: I shouldn’t say so far to the right, merely so much more conservative. mormont
I kind of feel that if Charles wants to make a point about returning things to their rightful owners, a more powerful way would be to hand back significant bits of the Crown Jewels. https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/celebs/a43538153/stolen-jewels-india-royal-collection/ Derfel Cadarn
A wilding
Since we have been talking about the water companies on and off here. Thames Water, my local water company, is already so loaded down with debt that approx 10% of my bills immediately disappear offshore as interest payments. However, this summer Thames Water declared that it had received £500m in new equity funding to assist with badly needed essential maintenance (e.g. less raw sewerage being poured into rivers). Good news for once. Except that now it turns out that this funding was actually just another loan to the company from its offshore owners. For which the company is paying 8% interest. It is now apparently £18b in debt. You have to wonder how long this can go on. Sophelia

Yeah, Phil can fuck off too. Starmer absolutely did not need to invoke Thatcher. He could have made his point by referencing some actual heroes. But the guy is so weak, so desperate to appeal to Tory Brexit voters, that he just doesn't give a shit about alienating huge swathes of traditional Labour support. You know all those Red Wall seats he absolutely has to win back to get his majority? Well, most of those seats are elected by people whose communities were absolutely destroyed by Thatcher and her policies. Where are his pledges? What happened to the change we were promised, eh? The man makes me want to vomit. Anyway, I'm either not voting, or going LibDem or Green at the next election. Starmer doesn't need my vote. And no, it's not because of this, it's absolutely because of his stance on the genocide in Gaza. So, Sir Kid Starver, along with his utterly revolting Tory chancellor can go fuck themselves. I swear to the non-existent god, I am going to fucking buy the Labour Party one day. Then he'll be sorry.
