I didn't think so either. I liked the movie, however, I'm used to Scorcese films popping with energy like Goodfellas and Casino, or with single-minded obsession to the point of insanity like Taxi Driver or The Aviator, or downright strung out drugged up hyper like The Wolf of Wall Street, in this movie everyone, DeNiro, Pesci, Pacino, even Cannavale all seemed so damn tired. Scorcese's directing felt like he was tired too.

I thought Pacino gave a pretty big performance. Also Stephen Graham had enough energy for everyone. :P

It's got enormous numbers of glowing reviews, interviews, etc. everywhere, and has been for over two months (at least here and LA -- for weeks haven't been able to tune into the talk shows on the local NPR stations without interviews, etc.).  Released first in Film Festivals, then this month in theaters, and now on Netflix. already nominated in 5 of the major categories for the Golden Globes.  Somehow Noah Baumbach is supposed to be the greatest original filmic genius in a very long time.

It's the medium. Because it's released on Netflix, a platform that millions upon millions of people have, a lot of people have seen it. It's like Bird Box. Lots of chatter.

I haven't heard anyone though claim it's the best movie of X period, let alone best movie of the year.

Nice, I suppose for those who like this sort of thing, totally competent, but come on -- who actually gives a damn about these people? Especially as they seem completely unconnected to the world in which we're all living where we can't avoid politics.

.....haven't been able to tune into the talk shows on the local NPR stations without interviews, etc.).

Everyone can avoid politics.   The next time you feel like you can't, turn off the national progressive radio that's blaring in the background.   Before you were bashing these..... Whites!..... they were bashing themselves.  It's a tradition.  The 'white people problems' movie genre has long been used to point out the pitfalls of not living a genuine life, or becoming shallow and vapid, or a creature of habit who misses the importance of events unfolding around them.  The romance novel industry uses these people as a loveless starting point.  There's also the mild entertainment genre for people who live mild lives and aren't looking for a wakeup call to guilt them into any deeper thoughts which often lead to depression, which they're probably on meds to counteract already.

I haven't seen Knives Out but I still find it entertaining.   Riann Johnson is what we have right now, in the way we had Lindsey Lohan for a solid decade.  I may look up that Hayek one you mentioned first and save the Riann production for when it's on TV for free.

Stephen Graham I'll give you. Even Romano seemed to be trying his heart at, yes he's been in some diverse projects of late but I got the impression he was trying his damndest with this cast, with this director, this was"The Show" for him.

Pacino gave a big performance but, to me at least, even at his biggest in this movie he still felt like he was coming off as tired and pulling it in from his past performances.

The movie was fine. I'm glad I watched it. I'll probably watch it again someday. But it still gave off those impressions to me.

In this context, the guy's supposed to be a brilliant experimental theater director who gets a 'genius' grant -- NYC's Public Theater's sort of star?  come on.  Also tell it to Jane Fonda and the other Hollywood types.

OTOH, I do shut off the radio's talk shows in favor of music only pretty much on weekends, etc.  But I don't watch / own a television so I don't watch.  I don't like my news on video either, so don't watch online either with exceptions for debates and so on).  But yes, I am totally tuned into what's going on and always have been.  I am a citizen, a voter. Plus I've worked always within professions staffed by people who are keenly aware of what's going on and tracking it because it keenly affects our professions, workplaces, and by golly yes, our livings.  That's only a few reasons why, of course!

But the chatter began long before December 6, when Marriage Story, went up on netflix.

However!  I wouldn't discount Netflix pouring huge amounts of PR effort and money into getting the chatter going.

I also watched Knives Out and found it quite entertaining. I was a little scared it was going to copy the Agatha Christie formula too much, but it didn’t , and I wasn’t bored.
I did feel like it could have been a bit quirkier , it felt like it was a Wes Anderson movie without being one, and needed a bit more Andersoness

I can definitely see some Wes Anderson comparison, I rewatched The Grand Budapest Hotel recently and when I saw Knives Out the will reading scene did remind me a bit of the one in The Grand Budapest Hotel. The dysfunctional family is also maybe a bit reminiscent of The Royal Tenanbaums.

I thought they got the tone of Knives Out about right, I don't know whether I'd have enjoyed it more if it had been quirkier.

Its also on the awards circuit and netflix are, apparently, spemding huge amounts of money pushing their Netflix movies for awards. Apparently quite effectively when you look at their nomination share for the Globes

I have to say that I feel sorry for Netflix. They started original programming in streaming services but it was the Amazon Prime who got to the accolades first. "Manchester by the Sea" at Oscars and of course "Marvelous Mrs Maisel" at Emmys.

Let's see how "The Irishman" works for them.

Amazon got there first at the Oscars, but Netflix snagged Emmys first with Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.

CBS not handling this MeToo controversy on Survivor well at all...   Apparently the finale will not be in front of a live audience, and pre-taped hours before for "security" reasons.  Probably more like to avoid embarrassment and litigation reasons.  I don't know if this is enough to cancel the show (I doubt it) but fans and former contestants are rightfully upset.  Doesn't help that the guy looks a bit like Weinstein.

Not with the biggest prizes - Best drama and Best comedy. It was a huge deal when "Maisel" won the top prize in Comedy.

Put it this way: I'm seeing far, far more live for Knives Out than I am for Marriage Story.

Did you mean to say 'love'?

If that is what you meant, 1) that isn't what I was talking about -- I was talking about coverage and push, which has been, at least in all the pubs I read, radio I listen to, far more for Marriage Story, beginning even months before it was coming out; 2) and so far, when it comes to award noms, MS is far ahead of Knives Out.

Now personally I have no skin in this game, I'm just wondering.  Though, personal preferences mean that Knives Out is something I'm looking forward very much to watching, while it's very unlikely I would have seen MS at all -- except it went up on Netflix, and I watched it while waiting for the flight to arrive of Somebody Very Special!

Well I was going to watch the directors cut of Troy. But disc 1 isn’t in the dvd case, and I don’t have the patience to find it right now.

So The Last Samurai it is.

People still have DVD's? I got rid of all of mine when I moved house. Never been inclined to watch one since.

Ha. Silly BFC.

I’m not people. I’m the Olpha and the Amega.

And I still watch my DVDs the same way I still play my old PS1 games.

Edit: Seriously, I got a couple hundred of these dvd bastards saved up from before Blu-ray and streaming was a thing. They play on my PS4, so why wouldn’t I still use them when  they aren’t currently available on a streaming service?

I still buy Blu Rays (and 4K). For one, they look better than streaming. I also like to be able watch something whenever I want. Netflix or whoever can just pull a movie/show off their service anytime they want (like IASiP or The Office). There’s also tons of older and more obscure stuff that those sites just don’t have. As far as DVD’s, I’ve upgraded most of mine to Blu Ray over the years, but I do still have some old tv series and whatnot that never even got a Blu Ray release.
