UK Politics: who's in charge today?

How many times can the Tories do this and not hold a General Election?

The Conservative Party expended vast amounts of energy and vitriol complaining about the coronation of Gordon Brown in 2007 by Labour without a general election and - to be fair to them - they did kind of stick to their guns by holding a general election after parachuting in Theresa May in 2017, and again after parachuting in Johnson in 2019. It's not a binding or legal precedent, but it has established this idea that if you change PM without consulting the country, you should consult the country within a reasonable timeframe.

I suspect that their counter to that will be that with the next election due in ~2 years anyway, hosting a new general election now will be too expensive and too divisive given the events going on. But it's also very hard to argue that the party is capable of governing the country for that long if this kind of chaos continues.

There are no perfect solutions in politics. But at least MPs should be able to understand the constitutional significance of something they are being asked to vote on.

I promise you they'll ignore it every time they need to.

What a comedy shitshow. Here's to the shortest premiership in UK history

If there is a GE and Labour wins a majority… will the UK (considering the Corbyn wing of Labour) continue to stand by Ukraine?

Yes. The Corbyn wing has mostly gone (remember Corbyn himself had the whip withdrawn after the anti-Semitism report and hasn’t got it back yet)

The Corbyn wing is not in charge of Labour.  and yes the UK will still support Ukraine.  that is NOT in any doubt.

Has Truss been PM long enough to earn money on the post PM speaking gig thing?

No apparently.

Another Tory MP called a cunt live in the News, albeit apparently by accident

So if there's a national emergency in the next week that *requires* an immediate decision by the prime minister; who gets to make it? I missed if Liz resigned effective immediately and if there was a caretaker PM in place until the next one's chosen.

Real question, if the Tories don't hold a GE and cling to power for the next two years, what's the over/under on number of new PMs in that time period? It seems like anyone who takes the job should prepare on day one for being sacked.

Speed dating until you hit upon the one: UK PM edition.

The Tories outperformed in the last general election and had quite a robust majority; now it seems like the next round will be a landslide the other way. How can they have messed up so bad in so few years? At least it tells you partisanship isnt as big an issue in the UK as say in the US, and voters are still persuadable on the issues or are willing to punish failures.
