So what's Hell like?

In hell, one must endure tortures beyond measure. Such as being forced to suckle from the sixteen leathern teats of Gophahmet, the Whore of Betrayl, until one bursts from an unwholesome engorgement of bile. Or being hollowed out and used as prophylactics by the thorn-cocked Gulburth the Rampant. Also common is to be roasted alive by the searing flatus that issues from the haunches of Asomday the Effervescent, or to be dunked upside-down and boiled alive in lard, while jackals gnaw at your feet, and Lord Grogar the Gonad Gnawer feeds you a risotto made of your entrails and butter churned from the semen of Beezlebub himself.

The whole hell as "absence from God" idea is just silly emo bullshit. Anyone who believes that, will be forced to endure in hell, the presence of an overly clingy stalkerish God who continually forces himself upon you, and in the truest repressed protestant-sense imaginable, forces you to endure depravities beyond imagining.

 L00n must have been channeling Bakker when he came up with this gem.

I can't believe that more people haven't figured out that we ARE in hell.

Reminds me, whatever happened to Manichaeism? Widespread religion, you know, all over the Middle East, Roman Empire, and China. Then it just fades away. Weird.

Weren't they persecuted a lot after a certain point? They did give us lots of inspiration for fantasy.

Unattributed:

“Heaven is where the police are British, the cooks are French, the mechanics are German, the lovers are Italian and it is all organised by the Swiss."

"Hell is where the police are German, the cooks are English, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, and it is all organised by the Italians.”

i cannot stand when people say shit like that.

really? your life is hell? if you have time to post on a internet message board i am in doubt.

What if someone close to you has cancer? Your life is hell and you can still post here. Just saying. You're taking the comment way too seriously, and even then, people posting here can have hell like lives. Outright dismissal of that seems rather rude.

But despite my son surviving cancer and the last three years feeling like hell, I'm just going to say--this world is pretty good. If it's hell I'll happily stay.

Physically, is it endless darkness? Lakes of fire? Endless recordings of Kenny G in a cramped elevator?

And how does someone stay sane enough or aware enough to be tormented?

Seems like torture porn via religion no?

As to damnation: So how does this work exactly? When I worked for a Dante Scholar, I remarked that this seem pretty creepy, as even if you take the heresy of salvation through good works (Pelagianism, right?) isn't it unfair to condemn people forever with different starting points for being morally better than others?

Just seems completely out of sync with any modern evaluation of how people work genetically and socially.

You always make these interesting topics ...

I think Hell is on Earth. You can find yourself in Hell at any time and without warning.

I don't know why you end up there, or how you get there, but sometimes suddenly it is happening and you are in Hell.

For example I heard this story about a babysitter who was raped. The dad told her if she told anyone he would kill her. She told her Grandmother and her Grandmother told the police. So, a case was brought against him. Then he picked her up after school because he said he wanted to talk about the case. For whatever reason she got in the car with him. He drove her to a river and shot her. But she wasn't dead. So he stepped on her neck until she drowned in the water.

I think that is Hell. And not just for her, but for all of us.

Anyway, you don't go to Hell after you die. That is ridiculous. Dying is just that--dead.

BELL: So a seventeen-year-old atheist dies. God will punish this seventeen-year-old atheist forever? Yup. So 17 million years from now God will be tormenting and punishing this seventeen-year-old atheist? Yup. And this is okay with God? Yup, that’s how it is. And for me it just seems like, I don’t know, that doesn’t—it’s not compelling. That doesn’t seem to be what Jesus was talking about.

It's a bit creepy to see how controversial Bell is. I mean, if you need other people thrown into an infinite concentration camp to complete your idea of divine ascension....

That's kinda like saying you only masturbate to snuff porn.

It's interesting that Bell stakes out a similar position, centering himself in what we might call Judaic ideas about transformation occurring in this world.

He's a fascinating thinker, given that he's rooted in the evangelical community itself.

I assume that there are still some literalists left. Not everyone wants to abandon whatever book they believe in because they feel that it doesn't fit what they feel or what society tells them they should feel. "If you need" assumes that people just consciously construct these things like fantasies and pick the most comforting ending. For some this is a divine edict, beyond their power to contest or complain about. It is the nature of the universe. I think you're subtly projecting here sci.
