Isn't Dune just the kind of super dense 'world' that studios might want to create an ongoing franchise around?  A whole world of prequels, sequels and interesting side characters and planets.

They're doing exactly that. I believe they're in production already on a prequel TV show, Sisterhood of Dune.

As for the viability of the franchise, they're probably thinking of how massively successful that GoT was whilst being aimed squarely at adults.

Weirdly, the 1984 movie had a whole kid's crossover marketing campaign (a kid's picture book version of the film, colouring books etc) which was very strange considering they couldn't go see it.

Also, Dune is like 500 pages long in paperback, 150,000 words or so. It's chunky but only moderately above average (well, by modern standards) and only about a third the length of LotR. It is plot-dense, but mostly in the opening part of the story. The novel mostly skips over the bulk of the war against the Harkonnens, but the film looks like it will be telling more of the story of the campaign.

No.  No.  No.  No.

There are only six books in the Dune series.  Attempts to pass off substandard poorly written fanfiction notwithstanding.

Only Frank Herbert wrote Dune novels.

Just so.  And within those 6 novels is a world so dense it makes Star Wars, Stark Trek and Marvel look transparent.  You've got the actual story of the Atriedes and what happens in the books, which covers thousands of years.  You've got Ix, you've got the Butlerian Jihad, mentats, Duncan Idahoes by the dozen, the Sardukar, the great houses.  Dense.  Within Dune there is science fiction, space opera and game of thrones.  It's very odd that no one has done anything more with this than Dune the first book. and doesn't seem to be any plans for same.

Not with Frank Herbert's hands on canon [and a dearth of, by all accounts, really shitty entries to the universe]

Or was It Brian lol

Aren't there now more KJA/BH books than Frank Herbert books?

Yes yes, and Denethor is a corruption of the sacred text. You are frequently disappointed by the lack of faithfulness that subsequent stories or adaptations show to the original material :P

Fanfiction novels are not and will never be Dune.  I refuse to read anything by KJA because of his defilement of the Dune universe.  His stuff is awful.

Yes, this is similar to my dislike of the horrible treatment of Denethor…

;)
