What did Aegon the Conqueror had that Daenerys won't have ?

Recommended Posts

What are the assets, qualities and personality traits that Aegon the Conqueror did have that allowed him to be successful in his conquest and his rule as a king of the Seven Kingdoms that Daenerys will miss during her own conquest attempt once she finally arrives to Westeros ?

Why and where Daenerys might fail where her ancestor was successful ?

  1. Sex: There's ample precedent for excluding women from the Targaryen royal succession. Rhaena, Rhaenys, Daena the Defiant... And queen Rhaenyra is considered a traitor and excluded from the offical list of monarchs, even though two of his sons ended on the throne and all the later Targaryen kings descend from her. For this reason, she'll probably find opposition to the idea of her becoming queen. Specially if there are other potential Targaryen claimants such as as Aegon VI or Jon Snow/Targaryen.
  2. Paternity: Daenerys is the daughter of the Mad King, who is widely despised in Westeros. Also, many lords who rebelled against him may feel that opposing Dany is a matter of life or death for them, since they will fear that she retaliates if she gets crowned.
  3. Allies: If she comes back to Westeros married to a Ghiscari slaver and accompanied with a kinslaying dwarf, an exiled knight, and a bunch of Dothrakis, she'd have big PR issues to solve.

Dany's opposition will be potentially more united than Aegon's was. Instead of facing individual kingdoms with individual agendas, she's facing a united Westeros, if with various claimants to the throne. She also has supernatural threats in the form of the Red God and Others that could potentially ruin her plans. She also has rival Targaryen claimants with potentially better claims to her Throne in the form of (f)Aegon and Jon.

I think it even goes beyond not-exactly-respected allies , small dragons , weaker claim and even lacking a game-changing penis.

  • Dany's knowledge of Westeros is not far ahead of a 7 year-old princeling's that Viserys was when he went on exile   and unlike Aegon whose curiosity about Westeros made him have a 3D map made, she doesn't seem interested in learning actual facts about her future kingdom (something proven in her conversations with Q Martell) which would prevent her from playing the game. she would have Tyrion for that but right now he is only his own man driven by thirst for vengeance .
  • Though she is clearly great when it comes to conquering , she doesn't seem to be able rule ... but since her rule on Mereen was far different from Aegon's rule on his kingdoms , I won't judge her by that.
  • unfortunately , she hasn't shown any promising skill in negotiation as well...
  • her (prospective) council don't seem to be much of help in these issues either. the Ghiscari are foreigners , Barristan is a soldier, Tyrion is smart but he's got his own problems, Victarion is an idiot and Marwin is an enigma. on top of that , people like the Dothraki, Daario and even Jorah are likely to be a bad influence as in encouraging her to burn them all!

I took me a while to stop laughing before I could read the rest of your post. The bullet points were excellent but when I glanced back at the opening I started laughing again. Best thread summary in a long time.

A penis.

Yes, yes. Penises are nice and having one is nicer. I love having a penis. I wonder what it would be like to have a vagina from time to time but, ultimately, I'd rather stick with a penis. They are great.

But not having a penis is not that big of a problem for Dany. Some of you think it is but it's not.

  1. Her biggest problem are her goals. Aegon simply sought to unite seven kingdoms into one. It was a single-minded, tangible, actionable goal. Dany's goals are not only many but they are bit more scattered and less defined. Her one, true ultimate goal is not for power or for societal progress. It's not even for justice. It is for home and family and security. When she gets to Westeros, what will her goals be? Is she trying to make a home for herself there? If so...why? Because she failed in Essos? Good luck with that. Is she going to solely focus on overthrowing Aegon and expose him as a pretender? Is she going to try to steal his birthright if she knows him to be true? Is she going to be solely focused on the Others and fAegon will just end up being a painful distraction? Is her trip to Westeros only about kicking Euron's ass for Victarion? Is she going there to try and marry Euron? Clearly, returning to Westeros and restoring the Targaryen dynasty has never really been Dany's goal. Let's say she's simply there to save Westeros from the Others and Euron Greyjoy. Okay...that's a lofty, hard-to-reach goal. Especially if she faces fierce opposition from fAegon along with all the other the lords, knights and smallfolk.
  2. The second biggest problem? Her lack of family. Aegon was not only supported by his sister-wives but also his half-brother, his castellans (House Qoherys) and his mother's family (the Velaryons, who also happen to be rich). For all we know, Orys' other relatives could've supported Aegon. In any case, Aegon had family that he could trust completely and rely on. Aegon's identity is very questionable and almost nobody knows about Jon. Daenerys will be going at it alone. The only people who can be counted on completely are Quaithe and Marwyn.
  3. Aegon also was not a foreigner. Dragonstone is an island yes but it is a part of Westeros; Aegon and his forefathers were known, respected entities in both Westeros and Essos. Aegon had visited Westeros multiple times both incognito and as the Lord of Dragonstone. Daenerys can't even claim to have spent a lot of time in Dragonstone's nursery or in childbed on Dragonstone.
  4. To build on the previous two point, Aegon had vassals who were native to Westeros. Daenerys does not. She can get them but, as of now, she has no vassals.
  5. Aegon faced seven separate kingdoms--and still only managed to conquer only six. Dany is facing one or two united kingdoms. Granted, those one or two kingdoms (I'm thinking the North will be independent by the time she gets to Westeros) are bruised and busted up but they are united.

Actually, Aegon the Conqueror failed in his mission to prepare the world for the arrival of the White Walkers.  Daenerys will succeed where Aegon failed.  She will be able to build Westeros back and hold it together to defeat the White Walkers and send the Starks to hell,

Daenerys will have everything and more that Aegon the Conqueror had.  She is the hatcher of dragons.  Daenerys is Azor Ahai.  She can always find more dragons and hatch as many as she needs.  She has a cavalry in the Dothraki that no other general has.  She has the very best foot soldiers in the Unsullied that no lord in Westeros could ever hope to equal.  Daenerys is also much smarter than Aegon, Jon Snow, or any other claimant.

Aegon's dragons were bigger and more mature.  However, the Westeros of today is much weaker and is still in a state of chaos. Thanks to Robert, Robb, Balon, Jon, and Cersei.

Daenerys has a better army.  Daenerys will have fought many battle campaigns before she reaches Westeros and will have had many battles on her resume compared to Aegon.

The main issue for Daenerys and something which Aegon did not have to worry about is distance.  Slaver's Bay is half-way around the known world.  It will mean a long journey.  That could be a good thing.  Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion will have time to grow and her armies will be seasoned veterans by the time they reach Westeros.

Daenerys has proven her abilities to outsmart her opponents.  Kraznys and Mero for example.  Those skills will get better as she enters adulthood.

Intelligence.

Age.  Mature dragons.  Help from two sister-wives.

All in all, Dany will have more resources at her disposal when she arrives to take Westeros back.  Aegon's Dragonstone simply did not have the resources to support a large army.  Dany has the whole of Essos to draw resources from.  And really, dragons do not have to be large to be effective.  Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal will have had plenty of experience in battle by the time they reach Westeros.  Vhagar and Meraxes may have been larger but those two rarely saw battle.  Dany's 3 will get plenty of battle experience as they make their way to Westeros.

Aegon's troops were not battle-hardened.  Dany's legions will be battle-hardened and battle-proven.  Her land forces will be greatly superior to Aegon's.

The most important advantage for Dany is destiny.  Dany is Azor Ahai.  She has destiny on her side.  Aegon was just the man who started the great Targaryen Dynasty in Westeros.

Aegon has the bigger air force. He’s a grown adult at 27. Dany is in her mid-teens. He had the Velaryons.

In her favor, Dany is already a ruler and a Queen. She is a Khaleesi of the Dothraki. She has seen much of the world and its people. Her Infantry, Cavalry, and future Navy will be better than his. She will have an awesome team consisting of Dothraki, Westerosi, Ghiscari, and others. She is very intelligent. She is fire-resistant. She has Quaithe, Missandei, Barristan, Greyworm, Vic, and Jorah. And three elephants.
