Why did Quaithe touch Dany ?

Recommended Posts

In Qarth Quaithe lays her fingers on Danys wrists and Dany felt a tingling sensation:

Quote

The woman stepped closer and lay two fingers on Dany’s wrist. “You are the Mother of Dragons, are you not?”

“She is, and no spawn of shadows may touch her.” Jhogo brushed Quaithe’s fingers away with the handle of his whip.

The woman took a step backward. “You must leave this city soon, Daenerys Targaryen, or you will never be permitted to leave it at all.”

Dany’s wrist still tingled where Quaithe had touched her.

What was Quaithe trying to achieve by placing her fingers on Danys wrists ? Some magical action ?

Supposedly this is sometimes used as a trigger for hypnosis...

Or she was feeling for a pulse?

Lol what was she feeling a pulse for . Also I don't think she placed her fingers on her to establish a connection to her via glass candle. Quaithe has been sending dreams to Dany since AGOT (whisperings of stars )

It'll be a magical reason but there's nothing else to go on. Maybe it allowed her to come to Dany in visions. Maybe it allowed her to track her. Maybe it allows her to see through Dany's eyes.

But Quaithe already was able to come to Dany via visions/dreams in AGOT

She regards Daenerys with reverence. Catholics want to touch the pope if they can.  The slaves reach out to touch Mhysa.  Quaithe and the Targaryens have been waiting for Dany for a long time.

Maybe , but why the tingling sensation? That's not normal

I disagree that the whispering stars in aGoT was Quaithe. This was either the dragonblood within Dany or the ancestral dragon entity of the darkling plain (Saagael). Anyhow, what I mean to say is that your interpretation or source is a hypothesis of yours, and not a confirmed argument to dismiss other poster's explanation. Perhaps, when the "touching" conflicts with your premisse, that is more argument to rethink the premisse.

The tingling sensation, well, the stranger invaded her personal space and made uninvited physical contact. Slight discomfort is to be expected. I have a further theory. Quaithe is Elissa. Some life extension magic keeps Elissa alive and it causes her body temperature abnormal.

diagnosis? seelng whether a Mother of Dragons who has survived a funeral pyre and hatched dragon eggs feels different? taking her temperature to check if she is a Targ? Getting a better connection to 'read' her in some way?

Two fingers laod flat does sound sort of diagnostic rather than social touching. (Some people/peoples do touch when they talk you know!)

That kind of touch is some kind of intimate.  Like she knows Dany.  And she would know of prophecies and Dany's significance if she is Shiera or Ellissa.  Dany doesn't know it yet but she is Azor Ahai.  Quaithe has no way to convince because it would sound like a lie.  But something in Asshai is the proof to convince Dany.

In GRRM's scifi novels touch makes a psychic connection easier. This might be a hint of that. The Hound overreacts to Sansa's touch on the shoulder too. Probably others.

Why two fingers precisely sounds a bit mysterious, but Jaqen laid two fingers against his own cheek to signal to Arya he'd made her second kill, and that doesn't suggest anything at all to me.

ETA

Tingling in Dany's POV is also the sound of bells. A summons to war, mabye?

Without a similar action by Mel or the ghost or some other magical seer-type person, it's impossible to say. But the tingling suggests that something was up, but perhaps not necessarily magical.

It’s like if your dream came true. You want to touch because the dream has become real.
