Viking Round Deux

For some reason that line by the saxon guy escorting Ragnar that they have no idea who built all the statues and bath houses really annoyed me - the Wessex Saxons knew who the fucking Romans were.

Other than that a good episode

I'm by no means an expert on this but Bede, an early English historian, attributed Hadrian's Wall to being built by a race of Giants, he seemed to have no knowledge of the Romans and he was active in the 7th century AD/CE.

Might be he had a knowledge of the Romans, but he attributed Hadrian's Wall to giants just because it sounded cooler? Those mediaeval historians liked doing that. :P

Actually its funny, I read that a long time ago in a news article and I just did a little research to confirm this and the author of the news article actually got it wrong to an extent. Bede had some knowledge of the Romans, all though he actually thought the British built some of the Wall right before or after the Romans left. His sources seemed very imperfect and probably a scholar in the 15th century would have known more than Bede would have. Bede's writings spanned 2 centuries, 7-8, he was Northumbrian and didn't write much about Wessex. He did confirm that there Roman aqueducts still working in this time period.

I'd be suprised if monks didn't know about romans.

Also a hairy trousered norseman asks you who built this stuff, why tell the truth. Giants sounds far more impressive than Romans

Nah, scare them shitless with tales of the race of greasy midgets who conquered the worlds

I found it interesting how Ragnar looked at the statues after that guy told him about the Giants. I could see his little wheels turning in his dome. "So this was Jotunheim? Really? Wait...they are fucking with me arent they?"

I'm liking Bjorn's haircut, I'm gonna tell my hairdresser to give me the Bjorn look.

Do eet.

Yeah thats kind of what I thought. Or that Athelstan had already told him about Romans, and Ragnar was testing them.

Its kind of funny that the History Channel had both The Bible mini-series and Vikings on at the same time. One that was basically a giant whitewashing of the bible with a very pro-Christianity message, and the other that doesn't portray Christianity in a good light at all. One got a second season, the other did not... just saying. :P

Man, I was sure Athelstan was screwed until I noticed there was still about five minutes left in the episode.

Business in the back, party in the front.

I think the show is actually getting better each episode. The reunion between Ragnar and Bjorn being the highlight of the episode. I also really liked the scene with Floki and Helga.

I also really hope that they do something interesting with Auslag, because so far she's just petty, stuck-up and bitchy and I really hope that there's more to the character than that. Especially since she is a character that most viewers probably already had a negative opinion about when going into the second season. But then again, Siggy was a bitchy hoe-bag for the first handful of episodes and she turned out all-right, so there's hope yet.

Few thoughts after last night's episode:

1. Poor Priest :bawl: I knew it was coming though (love spoilers!). He should have sailed away with Ragnar, but I guess all this raping and killing made him realise he will never be a part of his group. Or any group since no matter what he will choose he will always be a traitor to someone. Poor guy. I think that he may lose his right hand at some point (like in the trailer). That will make him useless as a warrior and as a monk (he won't be able to fight and to write anymore). I'm glad he's still alive but man, his future does not look good. :frown5:

2. I don't know why but I find Rollo quite boring this season. I miss him being a stupid and savage brute,

3. Family reunion at the end of the episode was really cute and moving. Everytime someone mentions Gyda I just :crying:

4. Jarl Borg and his eagle. To me it does sound like the thing we saw in Hannibal season one...

5. And finally King Ecbert and his bath with Ragnar. :cool4: I hope next time he sends some bath invitation to Athlestan :blushing:

If I was to guess at Athelstans fate, I'd go with being sacrificed at Uppsalla. Nails through the hands and feet, I'd be suprised if he can walk or close his hands properly.

Just that in the first season it seemed important that the sacrifices were willing and followed norse gods, an I guess the norse would see that as a good death, were as dying later unable fight and feast would be seen as a poorer choice.

Fimmels performance is growing on me now, and I liked the scene with Ecbert and Ragnar. Its said they are similar, which could be good or bad.

I am glad Ecbert cut Athelstans down, and I'm not counting him out because I think he has just become the "Daryl," of "Vikings" and will have more of a role to play.

Aslaug annoys me and I think that Lagertha, (shes back  ), will very shortly start to annoy her.

Loved the reunion between Ragnar and Bjorn, but I think it's okay if Bjorn gets rid of the backward mullet for something longer. He doesn't have to have the same haircut he had when he was twelve.

Love Siggy for being the glue that holds everyone together, but it's her fate I'm concerned for. :frown5:

Yeah, the last episode got me more on Ragnar's side too. (I mean the one before this week)

I still think he could have said "hey thanks Rollo" but whatever. Rollo is the man and I'm not sure what it is about Siggy but she is very attractive. No Lagertha obviously. My friend told me I could buy a life size cut out of Lagertha on history channel's website for 30 bucks. Already spent.

I liked the end of this episode, it was the best part, though I might have missed how Lagertha got her husband to agree to it. I assume after Jarl Borg goes down Ragnar is going to have to fight Lagertha's husband as she is probably going to leave him when Aslaug gets killed (just a theory). Or Aslaug will be sent away and since she is a princess she will come back with her father's army. Who knows, so many enemies to fuck up Ragnar's plans for England.

I don't think they showed how Lagertha got her husband to agree to send her with some men. I think we're supposed to assume he came to the conclusion it was indeed in his best interests. Either that, or Lagertha's beating his ass up on a regular basis now, and the poor battered husband can't even tell anybody, lest he be laughed down by the entire Viking civilization. That's how I'll imagine its going down until they explain otherwise.

Ecbert spared Athelstan's life (probably out of the desire to learn about his enemy), just like Ragnar did when he captured Athelstan, when all around him wanted the monk dead. So yes, they are much alike.
