I do not think that extends to the late Queen, who has never shown such contempt in any fashion and has made repeatedly clear her belief in her role as a servant of the British people, and who also served this country in the armed forces during the Second World War. It is entirely compatible to disagree with the idea or conception of a monarchy whilst also respecting the Queen as an individual (some, if not many, of her family members, considerably less so) and perhaps showing a modicum of respect for her passing. And I say that as someone who hopes that her passing will trigger a larger-scale debate on the future of the monarchy, which grows increasingly untenable with almost every passing year. dog-days
And the offices and kitchen-diners of South Wales resounded as one with a great cry: "Will we get another bank holiday?" (I have heard this asked three times already. It's not disrespect, it's practical anthropology.)
illrede
Reading the first poem in A.E. Houseman's "A Shropshire Lad" right now. There is a reason we divided nations into reigns, I believe. Something grand has passed.

This is a woman you never met, who does not give a shit about you, and with whom you have literally nothing in common. She and her entire family hold you in the utmost contempt. Personally, I'd be reserving my devastation for the passing of a close friend or relative. I very much doubt she did hold us in contempt. Andrew does, but thankfully, he will never sit the throne. We have no idea how she thought of us, that was the secret of her success. She barely spoke, let alone expressed opinions. As a result, people project what they want onto her. For all we know she could have been a die hard socialist, elitest facist or anything in between.
Werthead
Ten years ago, the Guardian estimated that the Queen and her attendant charities had raised over £1.4 billion (given historical exchange rates, probably close to or over $2 billion). Not entirely chump change.

I can feel empathy and grief for people for people in news stories that I hear about just once, celebrities I like who have died, even the death of fictional characters - and also for the death of the only monarch my country has had for my entire life (and longer). The feelings are mutual, I suspect, for a large chunk of the Commonwealth. williamjm
On a practical note, since there is some urgency for the Government to do something about the cost of energy crisis is Parliament going to be suspended for a period and interfere with that? Can legislation be passed during the interregnum or does it need to wait for Charles to be crowned?

He’s king immediately so that won’t have an effect, the issue will be if they adjourn Parliament for the mourning period

Given how long it's taken for some monarchs to have their coronations - Victoria was crowned a year after she inherited - I can't imagine it holding things up. Charles became King as soon as his mother died. eta: Maltaran beat me to it. Also, maybe I have been subconsciously struck by terrible grief. Caught myself using an apostrophe before an 's' in a straight plural.

Yeah I dunno if the Queen did hold us in contempt in outright thinking or privately saying 'eww the common people' but the very nature of her position was one of contempt for normal people.
