‘Astonishingly cruel’: Alabama seeks to test execution method on death row ‘guinea pig’
Nine months after Kenneth Smith’s botched lethal injection, state attorney general has asked for approval to kill him with nitrogen

Nine months later Smith has been singled out for another undesirable distinction. If the state of Alabama has its way, he will become the test dummy for an execution method that has never before been used in judicial killings and which veterinarians consider unacceptable as a form of euthanasia for animals – death by nitrogen gas.

Alabama has announced its intention to become the first state in the nation to kill a prisoner by forcing him to breathe pure nitrogen. The attorney general has asked the state supreme court to set a fresh execution date for Smith using the untested system.

The method, known as “nitrogen hypoxia”, theoretically works by replacing the oxygen breathed by the prisoner with nitrogen. In minutes that would reduce oxygen levels in the individual’s brain and other vital organs to fatally low levels, leading to death by suffocation.

Death penalty experts have decried what is in effect a human experiment. The choice of Smith as the first candidate for the technique, less than a year after he experienced a failed execution, has also been criticized as a double violation of the eighth amendment protection against “cruel and unusual punishments”.

The ultimate end goal for terfs and general transphobes is the end of any short of medical and even legal transitioning. There is no compromise, the people pushing the hysteria are ontologically evil.

Now for something unrelated:

I think maybe the reason why youths and milenials in the UK and the US haven’t been moving or voting right like their European peers is because of the devotion each country has shown to austerity these past few decades and devaluation of many social safety nets. No 20 year old working at a low-end job wants to hear they’ll be working into their 70s in order to avoid homelessness or poverty.

It is known that it works because of accidents(and suicide bags I guess) and you pass out after one or two breaths of a nearly pure inert gas. Happend to a former co-worker of mine who put his head in a vessel that had been flushed with nitrogen. No worries it had no lasting effect as he was pulled out.

It does not work without causing distress for animals which are capable of sensing low oxygen environments. Obviously any means of execution causes distress in humans unless they are unaware that people plan to kill them.

But causing maximum distress and suffering is a core function of the US justice system.

Judge says DeSantis’ congressional map is unconstitutional, orders lawmakers to draw new one
The ruling is a rebuke of the governor’s map that broke up a North Florida district.

A judge Saturday ruled that Gov. Ron DeSantis’ redrawn congressional districts in North Florida violate the state’s constitution and ordered the GOP-led Legislature to create a new map.

Judge J. Lee Marsh’s ruling is a rebuke to the governor, who previously vetoed the Legislature’s attempts to redraw Florida’s congressional maps and pushed lawmakers to approve his map that dismantled a North Florida seat formerly held by Rep. Al Lawson, a Black Democrat.

“Plaintiffs have shown that the Enacted Plan results in the diminishment of Black voters’ ability to elect their candidate of choice in violation of the Florida Constitution,” Marsh wrote in his ruling.

The section violated is commonly referred to as the Fair Districts Amendment, which states that lawmakers can’t redraw congressional districts that “diminish” minority voters’ ability to elect someone of their choice.

DeSantis even offends Florida 'conservative' voters with his brutal rudeness to President Biden and the First Lady.

What in hell advantage, and with whom, does he think this behavior will garner him?  Particularly as insurance companies are increasingly refusing to insure, and banks to write mortgages for homes built where flooding, hurricane and wildfires are constant now.  You NEED FEMA, and Biden's there to provide.

But being an out-and-out asshole evidently appeals eternally to the fringest of the fringe and that's who all these assholes are determined to appeal to.

Guess these are the front line cadres on which DeSantis et al. think will be there FOR THEM when they finally declare secession and war.  They are making war on us every day of course right now.  They just haven't quite yet officially come out -- haven't announced a date for the Secession Conference.

I remember a case study from my safety class in school. It was a tanker of some kind in dry dock. Three workers died (two because they were checking on the last guy who entered). It was a confined space that wasn’t ventilated properly.

They died not because they intentionally filled the space with nitrogen, but because the O2 in that space had been consumed by rust to the point where it was well below the safe limit for entry. None of them were wearing monitors .

ETA: if they actually do this, it will last just long enough for some Alabama prison official to inadvertently kill themselves or witnesses to the execution. Gasses carried over the air don’t discriminate the way a needle in someone’s arm does.

Presumably . . . if the fascists shut down the federal government by refusing to ratify a federal budget this will impact FEMA and all relief efforts for the endless procession of disasters: wildfires, hurricanes, flooding, drought, tornadoes.

Wish DMC was here, to tell us whether or not this is so.

By now, you should know better.

1 - Hurricanes, floods, and fires decimate much of the country (remember, as a card-carrying member of the 'Evil Liberal Conspiracy,' you are supposed to be igniting forest fires to make 'climate change' appear more than a hoax)

2 - Far Right members of congress shut down the government, including FEMA.

3 - These same far right members of congress then (successfully) blame 'democratic socialist communists' for FEMA not being able to respond to said disasters. They make it clear that all federal programs are laden with too much wasteful spending to receive their votes.

Well I am not DMC, but I am a decently high ranking Federal official.  When a shutdown happens, only 'essential' personnel work, but given FEMA's duties, they aren't significantly impacted, other then the fact that they wont get paid until after the shutdown ends.  Fortunately, with the last big Trump shutdown, Congress added a clause that Federal Employees will be repaid at the end going forward.  Having gone through a number of them, it wasnt always guaranteed in the past.  The biggest losers are contractors, since its up to the company to decide to pay them for the missed time when they can't work.

Given it's been over 24 hours since I made the last post to the US politics thread, I think I should be awarded the "thread killer" title or something equivalent.

Look, once we determined that Minnesota is a swing state and they produce and eat a lot of cheese I don't think there is much to debate any more. We decided the most important issues of our generation.

Court throws out Alabama GOP congressional map for violating Voting Rights Act
An independent court-appointed expert will now draw Alabama’s congressional map for the 2024 election.

A three-judge panel has struck down Alabama’s congressional map on Tuesday, after GOP state lawmakers refused a court mandate to draw a second majority-Black district.

The federal judges wrote that they were “deeply troubled” that the state legislature declined to draw two majority Black districts. The same court ruled last year that it should draw a second majority-Black district to comply with the Voting Rights Act. The Supreme Court affirmed the ruling from the lower court earlier this year.

And in Republican Party Internecine Warfare News from Arizona, the State Party Chairman Jeff DeWit pointed out that the Trump Loons don't have a good grasp on how politics or party governance work, noting that the Trumpistas in charge of the Maricopa County Republican Party submitted a request to the State Party to operate and pay for their own state primary on August 26.

This is a failure of foresight and planning, since the deadline for the State Party to submit a formal request to Arizona is September 1, and the State Party has a 30-day minimum notice for the executive to convene.  Plus the party doesn't have the money to operate such a primary, and the Maricopa proposal omitted any planning for military members stationed out of Arizona, the disabled, or overseas ex-patriot voters.

Chief Trumplicker Brian Ference of Maricopa County made the following rebuttal on Twitter/X, calling the rational "bogus" and said, "He has betrayed Trump and Arizona and is a Uniparty RINO and cannot be trusted with 1 cent of Trumps money and must be removed from office..."

I am not sure why Jeff DeWit would have possession of any of Trump's money.  Isn't he supposed to represent us Republicans, not just the God-Emperor Trump?  Anyways...Maricopa GOP loses bid to run its own presidential primary in Arizona (azcentral.com)

So many of these Trump people seem to have plenty of money, but they are dumber than a bag of hammers, and they show no interest in informing themselves of how anything works.  Just show up and blather at people.
