Watch, Watched, Watching: Watching Severance and working for Lumon

I've never watched Godfather I&II and not been blown away.  Perfect casting, great acting, cinematography, okay I could have used a little less brown, but that's a quibble.  I def feel that it deserves its place as 'one of the best movies ever made' even if James Caan wasn't Italian.  I can't imagine though what Paramount had been thinking when they wanted Robert Redford to play Michael, that would have been insane.

Casino is one of my favorite Scorcese films, I like it much, much better than Goodfellas.

Watched The Batman this weekend, which I had completely forgotten even existed.  Liked it a lot, but I have hated how the super hero movies all devolved into total camp, jokey one liners and much prefer when they take their stories more seriously.

Also Wolf with middle aged Jack, still charismatic as hell, young hot James Spader and Michelle Pfeifer, who was so beautiful in the 90s.

I can totally get not liking the whole mafia genre that's spawned since Godfather.  People have different tastes, and if aliens came to the US I could definitely see them wondering "hey, whey'd y'all get so into visual media depicting organized crime?"  (I have it on good authority that's how aliens talk, btw.)

Actually, anecdotal of course, but it's kinda funny thinking about ex-girlfriends and whether or not they liked mafia movies.  About half of them did, about half of them couldn't stand them.  The former, literally to a woman IIRC, were from the tri-state area.

I’m neither here nor there. I used to really like the genre and now I can’t stand it. Same goes for zombie stuff. That said, I love the Godfather (not part III though). Goodfellas is… alright? But Casino is a fantastic film, I love it as well.

Yeah, have run into people who just don't like films about the mob or criminals in general, regardless of their quality. Linda doesn't care for them, for example. De gustibus non est disputandum and all that.

I am one of those people. I've never watched any of the Godfather movies, Goodfellas, Casino, and same with TV shows like The Sopranos or Peaky Blinders. I watched The Departed and hated the story, I thought The Irishman was OK and yes a it's well done movie apart from the de-aging stuff. The only gangster related movie I've watched more than once and enjoy is The Untouchables, because there are clear good guys in it and it's based on real events with Capone getting his comeuppance in the end.

And you can add movies and TV shows about drug cartels for the stuff I don't care for. Breaking Bad is the sole exception, and even that one was a one time viewing for me.

Same here. And I haven’t watched Breaking Bad. Yet. Maybe.

British gangster films > American gangster films

yeah I said it

I actually haven't seen The Godfather though. No idea why. There are a lot of classics I've not seen, but that one's really one that shouldn't have escaped me, but has.

Mind you I haven't seen Long Good Friday either as the representative for British gangster flicks so... swings and roundabouts innit.

I look on the genre as a kind of historical fiction about a very important facet of American history. People today have a really hard time understanding just how big American organized crime was at its peak.

Today; these guys are more or less what's portrayed in the Sopranos. Fat, dumb assholes in back rooms doing stuff that's relatively small time. Back in the day; these guys literally got a piece of everything.  Hell, the legitimate business fronts alone would be worth billions in today's money.

One of my favorite scenes from The Sopranos:

I’m a dumb American. Give me some great British gangster films. Love Sexy Beast and like Lock,Stock…

Sexy Beast isn't a mafia movie. It's a movie about how Ben Kingsley will come to your house and fuck up your shit if you don't "Do de jowb."

ETA: Oh, also he has a crush on your wife.
