I am beyond disappoint.  Wake, turn on pooter, see everywhere blojo RESIGNED!!!!!!!!!.

But no, I remain condemned to see his truly grotty image everywhere, just like romperisto's equally vomit inducing image, who also won't go anywhere except headlines, forever and ever, world until the end, amen.

I believe they were separated at birth.

Ben Wallace and Sunak have a good chance

Sunak is hardcore fiscal conservative, he'd want to slash and burn government spending far more than the Conservatives already have over the last twelve years. A lot of Tories know that would destroy them in the next election.

A Kenney?  BTW what is “Checkers”?

Kenney is the current Premier of Alberta,  who resigned a while ago. Kenney’s Ministers didn’t rebel like this though.

Continuity of government rah blah rah.

British politics, when will there be a West Wing style show for us Yanks to watch in BBC America...?

I have sometimes wished for such a thing myself, but I have read an article recently which threw cold water on the idea for cultural reasons. The author asserted that Brits are simply too full of suspicion and irony to ever buy it. Idealism to the level of TWW would -- to the British public -- smack of someone either hopelessly unaware, to the point of incompetency, or else of diabolical propaganda. They would laugh it off the air or shun it on principle.

The author was himself British (IIRC) and his attitude seemed to accord with what I've seen and heard, so I expect there is something to it.

The only reason the public at large ever knew who he was is because political comedy show Have I Got News For You invited him on in the 1990s "as a laugh" and they kept inviting him back because he was such an utter prat and idiot that he made the audience scream with laughter at being so self-unaware.

The presenters have, more than once, formally apologised for this.

That’s the least shocking thing ever. At least they had the dignity to apologize though unlike that prick Burnett.

“Special relationship.”

But, and I hesitate to ask this, but who is next and how bad is it?  Like, it’s pretty clear that we have the Robot Satan from the Sunshine State coming through on our end.  He’s frightening because he’s a non-muppet and chillingly competent.  What’s the damage your side?

If only we could get someone as competent as The Robot Devil…

Re: who's next - they're all fucking terrible.

Imo, probably Javid or Tugendhat, Sunak just doesn't do well under pressure.

Lol thanks.  And am I right you all have a general election in 2 years so that the Torys theoretically could get shellacked, so the name of the game for them is to put in place a sacrificial lamb who hopefully won’t screw up the general for the party?  So, basically, if you are playing the game on their side, you want milquetoast loyalist who basically won’t do that much?  And the problem being that none of the contenders are able to help themselves (hopefully)?

Is there any Tory who is moderate, and moderately competent who would do a half decent job of mitigating current problems, but also devoid of charisma, and would get violated in the next election? I want that one.

Hunt or Tugendhat, maybe? Not sure how moderate either of them are, but they are at least competent and untainted by Johnson

I read this Twitter thread in hopes of understanding all of this better... it's in English, I think, but I know I'm more confused than ever over how all of this is going down, but not why. British politics, when will there be a West Wing style show for us Yanks to watch in BBC America...?

Just watch The Thick of It, which I think is like the original Veep.. for Brits. Probably a little outdated now but the petty bullshit is still applicable. As is Yes Prime Minister.

You've got to admire the Brits. If their party leader is screwing up they just resign en masse.

Would never happen in the US.

It already did, during Nixon's time (the 'Saturday Night Massacre') with the aftermath eventually leading to Nixon's resignation as well. Not the exact same thing of course, but I'd suggest the American case was more principled than a bunch of cabinet ministers seeing which way the wind was blowing.

Is this why Johnson wants to stick around?

But she's fucking Zac Goldsmith. Everybody knows this.

Not completely fair: the only reason he got invited on to HIGNFY in the first place was that he was already a very well known media figure. He already had the connections and profile to have pursued his political ambitions. It's also not that he was unaware: he was to a degree deliberately playing the fool, something he's done at various times. He can lack self-awareness, but he plays up to the part too.

What is fair to say is that even at this time, lots of people in the media (particularly and most relevantly Ian Hislop) and the Conservative party were perfectly well aware that Johnson was a habitual liar of very dubious personal morals who was using his public image of a harmless bumbling buffoon to whitewash his reputation.

So if the Tories fail to remove him immediately, and Starmer follows through on his threat and calls VONC, how will things play out?

If the Tories go with Starmer, does that trigger an election?

The alternative is voting against Starmer's motion, and then what? They're stuck with him again?
