Especially when benefiting from them yourself, but socialism I guess means Others get to benefit too, and how dare they! As the bromide goes: "socialism and nepotism for the rich; capitalism and boot straps for everyone else. DireWolfSpirit

Zorral
Tell that to the fascists in the legislatures here at local, state and federal level. Hell, even a grant to impoverished parents to get food for their kids was taken away by them in D.C. a few days ago. Anything that provides benefits to the whole instead of the rich alone is socialism. JGP

Nah. It's obvious what the issue is. 50 years ago Sweden introduced paid parental leave. 50 years ago was also when ABBA became a megastar. This is almost certainly not a coincidence, and as a result the world has been dealing with peppy Swedish techno dance. Do you really want to risk EVEN MORE of that? That guy clearly had parental love and support from both his guardians and LOOK WHAT HAPPENED. Finland has a similar problem except with heavy metal bands. Do you think these people were asking for help and love from their responsible others? Do you think these kids had issues with bonding? THIS IS WHAT YOU GET. THIS IS THE FUTURE SOCIALISTS WANT. But we know why, as even the self-proclaimed conservative who wrote the piece says -- the only reason is the voting block of Miami Cubans. And as with another country, Biden still has the knee jerk reactions for Cuba that he had fro 50 years ago, refuses to notice the world has changed since then in these cases. At the time Obama opened relations, personal and economic, with Cuba, it was reported that Biden didn't like it. Zorral
Segun Aremu: Nigerian traditional monarch shot dead and wife kidnapped https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-68179807 Keep in mind that in Nigeria kings per ser don't have political power. Quote ... Nigeria is home to hundreds of traditional rulers, who have no constitutional role but are a respected presence in community life. They are often called upon to settle disputes between local people, and lead cultural activities. .... Armed gangs in the Bermudas have prompted the US state dept. to put them at level 2 for traveler danger. Nigeria's currently at level 3, as is Jamaica, I believe. Cuba btw is a lot safer than the US, which rates itself as level 1. kissdbyfire and DireWolfSpirit

Why? I recently came back to full-time work after having been on parental leave for 6 months full time plus five months half time. It was awesome. My son and I got so much closer and I learned a lot about how to take care of him. (My girlfriend had about 11 months full-time parental leave before that.) The long parental leave in Sweden is so popular and ingrained in our society that not even right-wing governments like the one we currently have will so much as discuss reducing it. The only thing the left and right are disagreeing on is how much of it should be earmarked for each parent. Maybe something to pick up as an election winning issue for leftist parties in other countries. kissdbyfire
This could go n the climate thread… just terrible and scary. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/04/authorities-struggle-to-contain-forest-fires-in-chile Quote Firefighters are wrestling with huge forest fires that broke out in central Chileon Friday. Officials have extended curfews in cities most heavily affected by the blazes and said the death toll has increased to 112 killed. The fires have been burning with the highest intensity around the city of Viña del Mar, where a botanical garden founded in 1931 was destroyed by the flames. At least 1,600 people have been left without homes. Fragile Bird, Jace, Extat, Padraig and 1 other

Kalbear
Interesting - Saudi Arabia has stated publicly that there will be no normalized relations with Israel while there is no independent Palestine. This is a pretty big step back in normalizing relations with SA and SA had previously been decently warm to Israel even during the war in Gaza. https://www.cnn.com/middleeast/live-news/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news-02-06-24/h_a11e604ec144bb45307cf5efb0898d4e Zorral
