Also it sets up a new GI Joe movie at the very end. I also re watched S1 and S2 of 24. Man this was way worse than I remember. S1 especially. I think if you cut out half of the crap, absolute stupid crap, with his wife and daughter this could have been 12 instead of 24 and been much better. S2 is mildly better but they still pulled the same silly stupid shit with his daughter. I remember seeing the first 2 seasons, especially season 1 of 24 because the main plot with something about Serbian terrorists (Dennis Hopper was the main one!) with a nonsensical backstory and silly names (Viktor, Alexis and Andre Drazen - DRAYzen?!) and since I'm Serbian, I was laughing my head off throughout. US shows almost always get super silly when they randomly evoke other countries with zero research. (The Americans was an extremely rare exception where everything always seemed authentic. The show was fun in a silly way, but I was always confused why it was considered good. I think it got praised for some of the stylistical choices such as the real time fotmat and the split scrreen. But the latter had already been used a decade earlier by UK crime drama Trial and Retribution, and usually in a much better way. Ran
Forgot that I watched Miloš Forman's Amadeus last week. Well, re-watched. Still holds up. It's not really an attempt at an accurate depicton of Mozart and his life, and certainly the Sallieri calumny is understood to be nonsense these days (but it was a real theory put about, back in the day), but it's just beautifully performed by Tom Hulce in the titular role, and especially F. Murray Abraham as Sallieri. The last segment as we hear parts of the Requiem Mass is powerful. Listening to Screen Drafts on screwball comedies turned me on to The Lady Eve, starring Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck. It's from 1941, and is of course dated in a lot of ways, but Stanwyck sparkled. The basic plot entails Fonda being heir to a brewery with a fondness for snakes, and Stanwyck is part of a troupe of con-artists who set their eyes on him on a cruise from South America to the States. Hijinks, of course, ensue. It was directed and written by Preston Sturges, one of the great screwball comedy creators, but I think it's a lesser work compared to Sullivan's Travels. It gets rather flabby towards the end, I think, in particular, and attempts to serve up a few pratfalls from Fonda to keep the audience engaged. And we started the third season of The Witcher. First episode was fine, but the second episode felt incoherent and rather boring. I'm not sure what is going on, except one distinct aspect of it is that they really need to do something to remind people of the geography and the kingdoms. I do like the actor playing Radovid, though. Hugh Skinner's doing a good job playing the role of the rakish prince with hidden depths.
TheLastWolf
Prisoners again. Me too dumb the first time. This Villeneuve underrated with the likes of Fincher around hogging the (well deserved tho) limelight. Hugh Jackman underrated, Gyllenhaal everything. Deakins with that last drive through snow traffic, I nearly came.

They couldn't restart it so they gave us a free ticket and I went back to the next showing but I timed it so I would get there about 10 minutes before the spot in the movie where it stopped. That of course it meant that, sigh.. So apparently the day before I went to see MI7, there was another interruption at the theater... because of a bomb threat!!! I didn't find out until Monday. So yeah, I'm sure that gave more fodder to the conspiracy nuts about The Sound of Freedom showings.

Also as an aside, in my time in New York, a drinking buddy of mine happened to have been a body double for Caviezel for some lesser known movie of his back in the day. They looked remarkably alike. My buddy freely bashed Caviezel as a total prick on set, so I've always held a grudge and wasn't surprised once I heard he was a hateful person. That didn't bother me at all. Obviously Keri just couldn't pronounce it better (Matthew was better at it) but it didn't ruin my Suspension of Disbelief. Elizabeth and Philip are supposed to have not spoken any Russian for 15-20 years or however long they've been in the US. People forget languages including their first language when they don't speak them. My uncles who emigrated to the US when they were young and barely had anyone to speak Serbian to always spoke a kind of 'Serblish' with a strong American accent, occasionally using English words and typical English sentence structures and phrases etc. Edited July 19, 2023 by Annara Snow

polishgenius
Having discussed it in more detail with my brother, who saw it today, I have come to the conclusion that Mission Impossible 7 would be a much better movie if they'd taken some tips on storytelling from the writers of Fast X. (that's not even a joke, Fast X is a much better-structured movie) Admittedly it's also true that Dead Reckoning would be a better movie if it took some tips from the writers of Fallout. Deadlines? What Deadlines?
I just finished binging Succession. I can’t really add anything to what has already been said I’m sure. Great show. Alan Ruck is great as Connor. Brilliant performances all around. Except, for me, there’s this really depressing undercurrent of, “Jesus, this might actually be true.” Like, here are these venal, shallow, narcissistic assholes, with constantly shifting loyalties, who wield incredible power and make decisions that effect countless lives, and that might be how the system actually works. They leave a building and there’s always a luxury SUV with the door open waiting to scoop them up. Aside from Connor, I think the only time anyone even notices the opulence was with the Italian Villa for a wedding and the yacht where they were strategizing about which one of them was going to jail for the cruise fiasco.
